Ethan has a cars 2 one. Is that what I'd choose? No, but they're only kindergardeners once and it sure as hell beats the character clothing IMO. I think the majority of K's at school will be carrying something similar.
Bought both boys LL Bean backpacks last year. Both held up extremely well. Won't be buying new backpacks this year, but wanted to recommend this brand. They also sell a Jr. version which is perfect for my 3 yo.
DS already got his. (Big sale at ToysRUs.) He got a Ninjago backpack and a Ben Ten lunch box. Personally, I would have preferred something from LandsEnd or LL Bean, but we let him pick whatever backpack and lunchbox he wants.
we did PBK last year, this year we ordered 2 new ones from LL bean, I love the fact that I can throw them in the wash, they also got great reviews.
You can put them in the wash? Any special detergent or settings?
That's what I got from reading the reviews before buying, I also asked the customer service person I spoked to , she said yes, I never asked about the detergent though.
I'm getting an LL Bean one for DD#1. I'm debating what to get for DS and if DD#2 needs a new one. I still have my LL Bean one that I had when I was in high school which is the "same" as the one I had in elementary school. At the time, they had a lifetime warranty (not sure if they still do) so we sent it back if it ripped too bad or anything. My dad has also been known to sew it up with fishing line. Still, it's in great shape considering it's at least 15+ years old. We always just washed mine on cold with regular washing and it comes out great. Not sure what the new ones are like, but that's what I'm hoping for.
DD has one from Paperchase. If she didn't love it, I'd totally get the brown/pink bird one from PBK. DS has the skull set from Gap. Have you seen the toddler girl backpack they have. It's really cute irl. It looks like it is sold out online, but here is the matching lunchbox.
DS can't decide between Iron Man or one of the frog-camo ones from LLBean or Land's End (can't remember). I'm hoping he goes for the LL Bean one since the Iron Man one is likely to fall apart, but I told him he could pick. The only plus I see to getting a junky one if that I'm pretty certain DS will lose his at least once this year.

I think I'm going to go out and get a "backup" backpack, since I think DS's will probably fall apart too, and they are really hard to find in the middle of the school year. That said, he got a Batman backpack from Target last year and that thing is still in good shape.
DD picked the pink/grey on from PBK. Last year she had an Ariel one from the Disney store, it had name printed on the back, not visable (but my mother ordered it mispelled) and she's left it somewhere and we cannot find it. It held up though. She uses her PreK back pack for the summer program she is in.
DS1- He has a Cars 2 backpack with his name printed on the back (not visable) from the disney store. He also has a Spitfire (skateboarding company) toddler backpack but it seems dark for PreK.
ALL of the kids around here have character backpacks.
L just HAD to have a Star Wars backpack last year. It lasted just over half the school year. Slim pickings in January for a back pack, so he ended up with a Diego one. Its still in great condition, so he'll use that again this year, along with his Star Wars lunch box.

I was thinking about getting a Lands End one. We got the catalog in the mail the other day, and they seemed pretty nice. Does anyone know how the quality is?

dd has had a preschooler bag for 4 years (used it for MMO, then the first year of preschool), she used a hello kitty backpack for the last two years. now she picked out a new PBK large one last month when they were on sale. she picked the blue w/ white polkadots. she starts kindie this year
ds got a PBK small backpack for preschool last year. he's reusing it until kindie (in one or two years from now, we're undecided if we'll hold him back yet, he's bday is within 2 wks of the cutoff). for kindie I'll let him pick.
we looked at PBK, landsend and ll bean for dd, she picked the PBK pattern she liked.
both got PBK lunchboxes this year. dd's matches her backpack, ds wanted the batman one. they are much nicer than the target character ones we picked out last year. ds used it for camp this summer and it was easy to clean out.
DS has a toddler backpack from Four Peas. They have super cute designs and not every kid will have them. The strap started shredding early and I contacted customer service and they replaced it free. Must have just been that one backpack because the second one has lasted us almost 3 years now.
A Biebs backpack. She saw it at Target and had to have it. It was only $9.99 so I thought "What the hell?" and let her have it. It's her backpack, so if that's what she really wants, then that's fine by me.
Both girls got the PBK backpacks for the upcoming year. I bought some with the butterfly pattern on clearance a few months ago (navy with green butterflies and green with pink butterflies). The 3 yo got a Stephen Joseph backpack. His stuff is just too cute for the tiny set. I don't like character stuff either. I am going to let them pick out their lunchbags. DD #1 already got hers. I thought it would Disney or something but she picked out a black bag that said Princess with sparkles.
Last year we had a Children's Place backpack for kindergarten. Can I say that it held up great? It still looks brand new! I have even washed it a few times, no problem. So I guess I have to give their backpacks a shout out for quality and they are not cutesy either.
