Pregnant after a Loss

Tell me I'm overreacting.

Hey ladies.  I'm three days away from my big 20-week scan, and I'm panicking again.  I went to a wedding on Saturday and had a great time - too great of a time - and danced the night away.  I felt great, until so many people told me they couldn't even tell I am pregnant.  I'm half baked and I feel like I should at least look somewhat noticeably pregnant!

Then yesterday, we visited my ILs and I must have eaten something bad there, because I got sick over night.  Long story short - my ILs seem to have this little issue with expiration dates and food (I have no idea how they haven't gotten some dreadful bacteria yet).  I should have been more careful, but I wasn't thinking.

I'm feeling fine this morning, but I feel less pregnant and it feels like the size of my bump is smaller.  I haven't felt baby do its thing yet today (usually I get little taps in the morning).  I have no reason to think that anything is wrong, but I'm just a ball of nerves with my appointment around the corner.

Somebody smack me.

Re: Tell me I'm overreacting.

  • Sounds like the combo of the weekend and the looming scan have got you riled up and I think it is totally normal! As for the bump size - some mornings I think it's bigger then smaller and that's normal too. You just have the jitters and I bet you will feel 1000 times better once you see LO at the scan! Mine is in a week and a half and I'm starting the anxiety too.

  • You're not overreacting! It's totally normal to feel jitters before any u/s. I'm straight-up terrified for ours, and it's not for another 2 weeks.

You probably just over-exerted yourself just a little bit, and the dehydration and getting sick probably eliminated all of your belly bloat, so now you're left with your true bump. And baby is probably just being quiet because he/she is catching up on sleep from the big weekend!

I'm sure everything is fine, but maybe you can drink some juice and get LO to move around some for reassurance. Even though I'm not feeling major movement yet, if I go a day without feeling flutters I whip out the doppler and feel like a total psycho doing it.

  • I think it is normal to get nervous before scans. I know I do. I am sure your LO is fine. There are still days when I don't feel much movement and question if I feel it at all. Those days always make me worry. Good luck at your AS!

  • At 20 weeks I honestly felt like I didn't always look pregnant.  I even flew at about that point, and very few people seemed to notice they were being a PITA to a pregnant chick.  The size/shape of my bump still, to this day, varies...and it certainly did then too.  I had tons of energy (comparitively) at that point too, enjoy it! Regarding movement, its still sometimes spotty for me at 27w.  I went through a pretty big worry around 24 weeks when he seemed to not move for several days.  Turns out he still had a fair amount of room in there and was deep down...where I couldn't feel him.  At ~20 weeks some people aren't even feeling movement yet.  I know its hard, but please keep in mind that its pretty normal to feel no movement here and there at the stage you're at...even if you've been feeling it like clockwork.

It sounds to me like you've got some pre-a/s jitters going on.  Good luck this week!  Update us!

ps. Sorry about the food poisoning.  I've BTDT during this pregnancy and its no fun at all.  Its pretty unlikely it harmed the baby though, apparently only a few distinct kinds can directly.  Do watch your fluids though.

Thanks everyone - I'm just trying to remain calm at this point (it's never easy for me the week before an appointment).  Ugh - I hate being so needy.  I need to knock this off.

PNJ - thanks for letting me know your experience with movement, especially since our due dates are very close.  My doc, probably knowing my propensity to freak out, told me not to expect any significant movement until 22 weeks, so I'm probably ahead of schedule in his book.

Junebug, as I was hovering over the toilet last night, I thought of you and your absolutely horrid recent experience, lol.  I got lucky this time - I lost it once in the middle of the night, and it was very mild, and that was the end of it.  I've kept everything down since then and have been having lots of water.  I will definitely update everyone :-)

  • You are, no worries.

In my case I lost sleep for weeks prior to our a/s including NO sleep the night before.  I also freaked out everyone in the room during the actual scan because of my jitters...

Seriously - I'm all sorts of fvkd up in the head as a result of losing Jane.

    ....

As for baby being a slacker today - its nothing more than that.  There are days when Grace will kick me so hard it hurts and others where I'll only feel her swishing around and nothing more.

  • We all get this way.  I had food poisoning about a month ago and was super nervous.  Needless to say the dr wasn't at all concerned except for dehydration.  Drink lots of cold water to get LO moving,
imageBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker Every night I prayed for you. Then when you were in my belly, I prayed harder. Now that you're in my arms, I pray even harder.
  • Sounds stressful, but I'm sure you're overreacting. I hope all goes well at your scan this week!

  • I am about as far along as you and my bump changes daily and hourly!  It is very frustrating and makes me nervous too.  I'm sorry your feeling this way, but it is normal for the bump to go up and down at this time- I asked my dr. about it at my last visit!

  • As far as "looking pg" everyone wears pg different, I forget who but they are almost full term and have the tiniest little bump, there isno way I would guess that they would be full term.  If you feel good now (energy wise) embrace it, it'll be gone soon.

As far as what your IL's fed you, that sucks, I had salmonella with my 1st pg and stomach flu with this one and both were icky and not pleasant, but unless your dr is concerned I would just lie low and try and recover and have DH talk to them about food safety and pg women if you eat over there again.

Movement, I didn't get consistent movement until later in pg, maybe you have an AP, maybe you don't, but I wouldn't let a little less movement get you down at this point.  Hang in there..

At 20 weeks I honestly felt like I didn't always look pregnant.

Hey, I was at the hairdresser on Friday, talking to the owner, and I mentioned having an ultrasound, and she said "Are you pregnant?!"  Ummmm, yes, 31 weeks....  LoL  I was wearing a baggy shirt and sitting down, but still!

Some days I really FEEL how huge my stomach is - I'll be bloated on top of everything else and it feels like I'm about to explode.  Then, some mornings I wake up and touch my belly and feel like it has shrunk, and worry that something is wrong.

Really, at 20 weeks with a first baby, it is not unusual to not really 'look' pregnant.  You will definitely have a bump, but, unfortunately, it may not necessarily be an obviously pregnant bump and some people may think you just look like you've put on weight.  My guess is, most people saying "You don't even look pregnant!" are just trying to let you know that you don't even look "fatter" -- they didn't notice because you look so fantastic.  That's hard to hear when you've been waiting so long to get pregnant and want this baby so badly, but, in their minds, they are paying you a compliment.

As far as the food poisoning - Blech!  I'm sorry to hear about that.  I've known a lot of people who have had food poisoning during pregnancy - all it did was enhance the morning sickness experience; the baby suffered no ill effects.  I'm sure you're extremely nervous, with an OB appointment coming up, but your odds are excellent that everything is going to be just FINE!

  • You guys are great.  Really.  And I have to apologize for having so many freakouts; there are women here who have gone/are going through so much that is way more intense than my experience (even in terms of just plain old normal pregnancy symptoms) and I recognize I have to stop being so needy.  Pulling on my big girl panties right now.  Thank you, and (((((HUGS)))))) to all!
  • Just to give you even more reassurance: I am around 20 weeks as well, danced ALL night at a wedding (after taking pictures ALL day in the heat) and pretty much felt like crap yesterday too.  I started to worry, but then I realized my stomach was sore because I danced so much and I felt like crap, because I was really tired.

AND, the groom's SIL (who we know) said she had no idea I was pregnant until someone told her one of the bridesmaids was pregnant and then pointed me out.

So...we both partied a little hard and were paying for it yesterday and I am sure our LO's are more than healthy and just taking a little nap after all the excitement, much like I wish I could do. :)

  • Your story is exactly the same way I am feeling after yesterday, totally understand your fears!  I am 20 weeks & hosted my sister's bridal shower yesterday & had everyone telling me I don't even look pregnant!!  People are so annoying, sorry you had to deal with that too!

Sorry about eating something bad too- but I am sure that is okay.  Either way, did you call the doctor's office this morning to run it by them?

And remember that movement is not regular yet- I felt it last night & today, but hadn't felt it since Thursday before that.  Hope you feel it very soon!

Good luck with your appointment!!!  You will make it & your baby will be perfect!
