Newbie Overwhelmed by TBW

So I have lurked here and maybe posted a few times, but today I signed up at TBW and was COMPLETELY overwhelmed with the site.  I found it really hard to find what I was looking for, and maybe part of the problem was that I didn't really know what I was looking for.  But I know that you all are very responsive and helpful so I will just ask my questions here.

1. If you could have one carrier for a newborn, what would it be?  woven, Moby, SSC, etc?

2. Is it worth having an SSC like a Beco and a BabyHawk or can H and I share one?

3. What would be the one carrier you couldn't live without that lasts the longest as LO grows?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Newbie Overwhelmed by TBW

  • Would you skip a Moby and go straight for a gauze wrap since it can be used passed the Moby weight limit?

  • Well my thoughts are biased by the fact that I've never tried a SSC, and have only used wovens and a pouch sling.

    1) I would get a woven because baby will outgrow a moby. Having said that, I know heaps of people who love a moby for a newborn because they're snuggly, so if it's in your budget to buy another carrier later...

    2) Whether you can hubby can share a woven depends on how close you are in general size. If you're tiny and your hubby is huge, then a woven that works for him would probably drown you.

    4) Up until LO was around 10months I couldn't live without my sling. I used it all the time for popping in and out of shops, and I was comfortable in it for a couple of hours. Now LO is bigger, I can't live without my wraps. I used them when she was younger too, but only for long haul trips.

Everyone will answer you questions differently based on her personal preferences, situation, expereinces, etc.

    1. If you could have one carrier for a newborn, what would it be?  woven, Moby, SSC, etc?  Woven because it's the most versatile and can be used into toddlerhood.

    2. Is it worth having an SSC like a Beco and a BabyHawk or can H and I share one? You can definitely share one.  It can be a pain adjusting between to users, though.

    3. What would be the one carrier you couldn't live without that lasts the longest as LO grows?  A woven wrap because it's the most versatile.   Unlike pouches are ring slings, a wrap can always be used with a two-shoulder carry.  With an SSC, you may find that one brand works better/worse for you than another--due to your torso length, how wide you are, how fluffy you are, etc.  You can also comfortable use it for hip carries & high back carries.

    Thanks for your help!

  • 1. If you could have one carrier for a newborn, what would it be?

A woven for sure.  I had a stretchy wrap for my DS when he was tiny, but now that I have learned how to use wovens I am pretty sure I will just skip the stretchy for future babies.  It's way more comfortable.  The stretchy wrap was just SO hot, and during the weird hormonal postpartum time I did not need anything that made me hotter.

    2. Is it worth having an SSC like a Beco and a BabyHawk or can H and I share one?

We have an SSC (a boba) that we share, but if we used it a lot we'd probably each have one so we wouldn't have to adjust the straps between users.  I rarely use the boba and usually wrap, and DH wraps a lot, too, so we only use the boba occasionally.  It is really nice to have sometimes though.

    3. What would be the one carrier you couldn't live without that lasts the longest as LO grows?

    Woven wrap, for sure.

  • I don't have a ton of advice, since I am still fairly new to BW, just wanted to say it is VERY easy to get overwhelmed and confused on TBW. I was so lost I almost gave up trying to BW - I figured I was too stupid, lol! If a message board confused me, how could I figure out carrying my kid?!?!

But after a few weeks of just reading a little bit at a time, I am starting to feel more confident in my knowledge- albeit, still a very limited, basic knowledge. I am not as confused or overwhelmed.

What I did was pick one type of carrier to learn at a time and read up on that. Not jump around from page to page. I spent a few days on each type, read a lot, watched YouTube videos, searched FSOT for items (just researching cost, popularity, colorways, etc). This helped me understand more.
