Safe or not?

Should I register for/use those mirrors to see baby in rear-facing car seat? I had two on my registry but am reading they aren't safe and can become projectiles in a car accident. Just curious what y'all think :)

Re: Safe or not?

  • Well...the way I look at it, any improperly anchored item in the car is at risk for this.  I'd rather be able to glance up and see baby is ok, than to worry about it an entire ride somewhere.  I'm registering for one.

  • Not something I would worry about.  Could they become a projectile?  Sure.  But so could anything else in your car.

  • I agree with Jerilyn, I think the pros outweigh the cons, I will be using them.  I will be sure to check them regularly to ensure they remain securely fastened.

  • the year before ds was born, 4 babies in our state died because of them.  that was enough to convince me not to use them.  i used to have an hour + commute each way to work and never once needed to see ds in the car.  if i was looking at him,  wouldn't be looking at the road anyways.  we also don't do any type of toys, food or drink in the car, which I would imagine would be why people feel the need to be able to see their babies?  I dont know.

  • I had one for my son... and never used it. It was useless to me. It's a good idea, but not practical.

  • We were told in out childbirth/parenting classes that they were unsafe for the baby in an accident and they are a distraction to the driver and cause accidents. We took them off our registry.

  • I used one with DD and am going to use one again with LO.  I am sure anything in your car could potentially become dangerous during the course of an accident.  I wouldn't feel comfortable on long drives not being able to see LO at all.

  • I used one with both my kids. It actually came with a hook that attaches to the back of the seat. So it really was secure and barely moved. I plan on using it again for #3. It was a monkey one. I think the ones that can become projectiles are the kind that dont fasten to anything. Maybe do some research on how they fasten to the seat. You might feel b

  • Technically, yes, they can be unsafe in a crash....but then again, anything that's unsecured in your car could be a projectile.

That being said, we have one and still use it (DS is still RFing) and we love it. I'm careful about only looking into it when I'm stopped at a stoplight or stopsign so that it doesn't distract me from the road.

  • DH & I took a car safety class with a certified person from our state. She suggested the blinds and mirrors are not necessary and like others said can become projectile. We did not register for them because of that class.

  • Hmm so much to think about. I appreciate the opinions. I'll probably ask my doctor on Friday too.

  • All the mirrors specifically designed for the car are made of very lightweight plastic coated with a mirror finish and couldn't be any heavier than anything else you'd have in your car.
