I was admitted to the hospital exactly a week ago when my water broke at 32w5d. I wasn't in labor at all, was dilated 1cm and not at all effaced. They claimed I had contractions 6 min apart, but I never felt anything. Since then, I've had no contractions and have just been on hospital bed rest and antibiotics trying to get me to 34w. LO has been monitoring like a champ and shows no signs of distress at all. I'm going to be induced on Monday (34w2d) or if the full moon lives up to its reputation and L&D is full, on Wednesday (34w4d).
I was all prepared for a natural birth (Bradley) and now I have no idea what to expect. I'll have an internal tomorrow to check for any progress, but I have an idea that there will be none at all, so we will be inducing starting at 0.. my body is not ready to give this baby up yet. I'm terrified of trying to force it and ending up with a c-section.
Have any of you been induced at 34w for PPROM and had successful inductions? Please tell me about your experience being induced. I'm sort of slightly freaking out here.
Re: Induction Q- PPROM
I pPROMd at 25w5d and ended up delivering my son at 27w5d. Like you, they would have induced at 34w if I hadn't gone into labor again. I had a med-free (Bradley - although we only made it to 4 classes before I pPROMd) birth. They did give me pit to deliver the placenta - still not sure why they did that, but there was a lot going on since I was delivering a micro-preemie in a regular L&D room. Most of my labor we were all hoping it was not real labor, so I labored on my back and actually tried to stop the contractions - lots of water, laying on my left side, etc.
Anyway, have you shared with your doctors the desire to have a non-medicated birth? Mine were supportive and would have been willing to let me try "natural" induction methods at 34w had I gotten that far. I would definitely talk it over with them to see what your options are. Good luck and good job keeping LO in there a few more days!
I was in a very similar situation to yours: my water broke at 32 weeks, I was admitted to the hospital and put on bedrest and given antibiotics, and was induced at 34 weeks. I too had contracted the first night, then things settled down, and I was only 1 cm dilated and about 50% effaced when it was time to induce.
I didn't have any desire for an unmedicated birth, but I very much wished for a vaginal delivery. My situation differed from yours in that I was trying for a VBAC (it actually would be my second VBAC), so my doctor had to be extremely conservative in what induction methods they would use. Normally with VBACs they won't induce you at all because of the risk of uterine rupture, but my doctor was very supportive of me and my desire to avoid a c-section.
Anyway, they started me on an extremely low dose of pitocin, and kept me on it for about 8 hours. It was so low, the contractions felt like period cramps, more uncomfortable than painful. After only making about 1 cm progress all day, my doctor decided to insert a uterine catheter so they could better measure the strength of the contractions. They were finally able to turn up the pitocin, and I got my epidural a couple hours later. I labored all night (actually slept through most of it), and then when I was fully dilated, I pushed only 3 times and she came right out (she was 4lbs. 10 oz)
It was (relatively) a very easy labor and delivery... hope yours goes just as well! I think starting the pitocin so low and keeping me on it for a while helped a lot. Not sure if this helped at all, but just wanted to share an induction success story
Thank you for sharing your experiences, ladies. I spoke to my OB again this morning and she said they will insert the Cervadil on Sunday night and see what happens. If it doesn't make me go into labor, then they will push the pit on Monday morning. She knows I want to go unmedicated and is very supportive of that so she and I are both hoping that the Cervadil does the trick on its own.
Kaytee, I've only been on bedrest for a little over a week and its making me crazy. Kudos to you for sticking it out for 10. Wow!
I pPROMed at 34w3d and was on bedrest for a week and induced and DD was successfully born after 29 hours on pit/cervadil (2 days, 1 night inbetween) at 35w3d. Interestingly the MFM I saw recently for preconception appointment said that she thinks in a few years the recommendations will change to induce at 37+ weeks, not at 34 or 35-36 (dependent on which school of thought they believe in). If it happens to me again I honestly will fight to not be induced until technical term if fetus and I still look good. In the end they had to break another bag of water during my induction and remarked we would have been fine waiting longer.
DD did great- she had zero issues except she refused to directly breastfeed and I EPed for a year. Best of luck to you -- I'm sure your LO will do great!
BFP(4) DD2 born 2.14.13 @ 35w5d due to pPROM
My membranes ruputured at 30 weeks and I was put on hospital bed rest. I was 3cm when I was admitted and honestly didn't know my water had broken because it was such a slow leak. I was induced the morning I turned 31 weeks due to fetal distress and signs of infection. I was given pitocin and delivered my son 10 hours into the induction. I had a natural birth, although it wasn't what I had planned for. The anesth. could not insert the epidural because I was having horrible leg pain when he was attempting it. Pain killers were not an option because they would make the baby drowsy and like my doctor said, "we dont want to deliver a groggy premie." Although it wasn't at all what I expected my birth to be like in the end I knew it was for the best. You can definatley go natural with an induction if it is in your plan. Good luck!!!! Let us know how it goes!
