Breast pumping

Anyone going to BP at work?

What type of pump do you have or will you get?

Is there really a reason not to use a family members pump that hasn't been used in a year or two?

Re: Breast pumping

  • Sorry I didn't see the BF board-so I posted there!

  • I did, and many of the ladies here do.

I used a Medela Pump In Style Advanced

Hygiene.  But if you get all new tubing and anything that touches milk, you should be able to use the motor no problem.

  • I also have the Medela PISA and it's great.

  • I pump at work.  I have a Medela PIS.  On the used pump, buy new parts and use the motor, but the motor is only waranteed for a year.. so you might take it to a lactation consultant to make sure that it is still in good working order.  It's really frustrating to try to pump and fail because of your equipment, so if you can at all afford it, I'd buy the new one.  It's probably lighter and easier to take with you than the older one and you're really saving a lot of money by breastfeeding, even if you include the cost of the pump.  There are usually good sales on last year's model in January, so take a look at places like www.babycheapskate.blogspot.com to find a great sale price.

Good luck!  It's hard work, but well worth it.

  • medela pis, well worth the investment when I look at how much money we saved not buying formula! we have had to supplement in the past several months, but are using the cans that our dr. gave us!
  • I went back at 5 months and pumped. Supply never really recovered from it though, it just isn't as effective as a baby no matter how great the pump is.

?I got an Ameda Purely Yours electric. It was great, had fabulous customer service too including international support such that they would ship a spare part to an hotel the day I asked for it and it would be there the day I arrived.

Yes - it would be gross to use an old pump. There is only 1 closed system pump on the market (the Ameda) and ALL the others including the much popularised Pump in Style series WILL have microbial amounts of milk backup into the pump itself. IMPOSSIBLE to ever clean that and GROSS and unhygenic. Probably won't kill a baby, certainly not an older baby, but no less gross for that. The bacteria count in those things is pretty appalling. And that is even if you buy new attachments because it is in the motor!

The ameda is a closed system so that can't happen. But I still wouldn't share.?

  • I used the Lansinoh pump. Same as the Ameda described above, just a different 'brand' name of the pump.  I loved it, it worked great and I pumped a full year with it.

  • I use the medela PIS and love it. I've been pumping at work since DD was 3 months. There are so many women on here who do pump so you have come to the right board also!
