Preemies

LO has a hard time sleeping...

...Unless we are holding him. He will be 2 months on Tuesday and 2 weeks adjusted today. Since he is a preemie, should we keep holding him since technically he is a "newborn"? Or do we start putting him in the crib and let him cry it out until he sleeps?

Also, LOs been sleeping in a PnP in our bedroom since he came home at 4 weeks. I don't want to create bad habits and have him not sleep in his own crib. Is it a good time to put him in his own crib now? We get our baby monitor this week and was thinking of weaning him into his crib as well.

TIA!

Re: LO has a hard time sleeping...

  • It is my understanding that you go by adjusted age, and not actual age.  So, I personally won't start to even consider Cry It Out until at least 6 months actual (4 months adjusted).  I'm not sure I'll ever be able to do it.  Letting him cry just seems horrible to me.  I'm a softie.

Gabe sleeps in his crib at night (for the most part).  We do have a RNP in our room that he uses sometimes.  During the day he sleeps in a variety of places (RNP, swing, PNP, crib).

For my own sanity, I think of him as his adjusted age, which is 5 days old.  I don't expect him to do anything differently than a normal 5 day old.  If he does (like he started cooing a little this week) then it is a happy surprise.

I feel terrible when he cries and love to cuddle him and DH thinks I am setting a bad precedence (even though I catch him cuddling him when he cries- lol).

I love being able to wake up and see him at the foot of our bed in the PnP. Sometimes I think I will have a more difficult moving him into his crib than  he will- and I SWORE I would never have a baby sleeping in the room with us longer than 2 weeks. My oh my how having a preemie changes the way you think!

I agree with you. I don't expect anything from Tyler other than milestones at his adjusted age. The way I see it is every milestone that he is achieving, he is ahead of the pack since I'm going by adjusted. If he doesn't "make" a milestone with his actual age, he just has to catch up. It's not like he's behind.

  • We had a PNP in our room for the first month or so, but none of us were really sleeping. JS is a grunter and I'm a light sleeper and a worrier. Moving him to his crib was the best move we could have made. Even now when he naps he doesn't like the PNP. I think he likes the firmness of his crib matress.
Do you swaddle? Once JS hit about 6.5 pounds, we switched from swaddle blankets to Summer Swaddle Me. The velco makes it so easy.

  • I've been battling that same question.  LO just turned three months/13 weeks yesterday, but is 7 weeks adjusted, and at night we have to hold him for him to sleep.  During the day, if we're lucky, he'll fall asleep on his own in his swing or car seat (car seat when he's in the car).

So far our decision has been to keep trying to put him down to sleep, but not to let him cry it out if it's not working.  I'm a little worried though about how we'll manage to get him to sleep in his crib.  Part of our trouble is that he nurses to sleep (but honestly, I don't mind doing this at all, just wish I could put him down afterwards without him waking up).  It's been encouraging that he will fall asleep on his own during the day, so maybe getting him to sleep in day care won't be a nightmare.

So sorry, I don't have any suggestions for you, but I too go by his adjusted age as far as milestones etc.  Our pediatrician told us that we would have to start weaning him from sleeping on us soon (i.e., she said in a month at our 2 month visit and he's 3 months now) or else we'd be in trouble... I hope she's wrong!
