Possibly Dumb Question about BFing and Minipill

I'm BFing and would like to continue for a while (a year or so, depending on what DS wants). I know there's the thing where if you BF once every 2-4 hours, it should keep your hormones at a level where you won't ovulate/get your period. I still feel better being on the minipill as birth control because I do NOT want to get pregnant again anytime soon, I can't stand condoms, and we want to try in maybe a year or so (so no IUD).

Soo my question is: being on the minipill won't CAUSE me to have a period before I was going to, will it? Is it just there to make sure I don't get pregnant should I happen to ovulate while still BFing frequently? There are no placebo pills in the pack.

I realize I should have asked my doctor about this a month ago when I started taking them, but for some reason I just started worrying about it now and thought someone on here might know. Anyone?

TIA

Re: Possibly Dumb Question about BFing and Minipill

  • Short answer: No, taking the minipill won't trigger AF while you're BFing.

Long answer: The period you get while taking BCPs of any kind is due to the lack of hormones in your system that results when you stop taking the pill. If your hormone levels from BFing are still high enough to prevent AF, the lower hormones during the placebo week won't be enough to trigger AF. If AF shows up during the placebo weeks, it probably means your hormone levels aren't enough to be preventing ovulation. In which case, it's a good thing you're on the pill!

  • Yeah, no placebo pills, so that's not a concern! Brush up on the mini-pill, resident pharmacist. Wink

I've got the exact same story as you, and I don't think the  minipill will have any impact on when we get our periods back. Breakthrough bleeding is really common, though, especially if you miss a pill or take it late. I haven't had any problems (I've been on nearly 4 weeks), but I have never had a problem with any pill I've taken. Hormones just work well with my body.

Depends on the pill pack they put you on. Most of the mini-pill packs we dispense come with a week's worth of placebo pills. The one I used to take has them as well. Not that you have to take them.
