VBAC

Pitocin?

I am 38 weeks and would like to have a VBAC with my 2nd delivery.  The only problem, I don't dilate very well and my Dr. says I have an unfavorable cervix and have failure to progress in labor. I was a dimple dilated last week but my cervix was still long adn closed. I'd like to try very low-dose pitocin over the course of a 24hrs, the day before my scheduled c-section but my Dr. is a little unsure about it.  Has anyone else used pitocin with an unfavorable cervix and had a successful VBAC?

Re: Pitocin?

  • I did.  I was 70% effaced and a dimple dilated when they started me on pit (at 41 weeks).  Obviously, they don't give you as much as a regular induction because of the VBAC but they did slowly bump it up a bit over time.  They started me on it at 7 am on a Tuesday and I had until 7 am on Wednesday to get it done or it would be RCS time for me!  I delivered my DD at almost 2 am. I was on pit the entire time but it got the job done!

  • Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your story! You have given me a lot of hope of toughing out the VBAC with pitocin.  I am going to try with all my might not to get an epidural as it slowed my labor during my 1st delivery.  Your thoughts and advice mean so much!
  • No problem!  I am on here often if you need any other advice/encouragement!

  • I had pitocin for my VBAC attempt. My doctor also used a foley cath to manually dilate my cervix. I went from a fingertip to 5cm in about 5 hours. After that they started the pit. You may want to discuss the option of a foley cath id your doctor isn't entirely comfortable with starting your labor with pit. GL!
  • I should add they attempted a foley with me but it only works if you are already partially dilated.  Since I wasn't, it didn't work.

  • Can you wait a few more weeks to see if your cervix will become more favorable?  It's very possible that you could still dilate in the next few weeks, at least enough for them to either break your water or try the foley bulb.

I know that at my hospital, they will not do any pitocin at all for VBAC patients.  But there have been women here who have had a little pitocin and have had successful VBACs, if I recall correctly.
