Hi! We have just determined that we are going to be inducing our new baby girl b/t 36-37 weeks due to my medical situation (non-pregnancy related). I know this is considered practically full-term and babies this far along are typically without too many problems, other than respitory concerns.
I just thought I'd put some feelers out there to see if any other moms have some experiences that can reassure me that we *should* be okay. All my other babies were born at 41+ weeks, so I'm just a little nervous about this one.
Thanks!
Re: Looking for some reassurance...
I'm so sorry you're in a position where you have to make this decision, it has to be incredibly difficult.
The quick answer is yes, most 36-37 weekers do quite well. There are exceptions to every rule, and yes those last few weeks are there for a reason too. For the most part, you already know about the breathing issues. The other thing is stamina for eating. I haven't had a 36-37weeker, so all of this is from what I've heard/seen of others. My niece needed a lot of stimulation to stay awake and BF, needed to be woken up to eat. Feedings were extra work for about 2 weeks.
Are they doing an amnio to check lung development? If they do, and it comes back immature, you can ask for steroid shots to help develop them more. There's actually some research that it helps develop a lot of things, I'm not sure if your doc will think it's necessary this far along, but I think it would be worth asking at a minnimum.
Big hugs and GL!
Many of the babies on the multiples board are born around that time and get to go home without NICU time...hopefully that will be the case for your singleton!
