VBAC

Big baby VBACs - possible?

I told my OB that I want to attempt a VBAC. On Thursday, she said that I'm starting to measure big again (my son was 9lbs 3oz) and she's scheduled an u/s to get a better estimate. She also scheduled a c-section "just in case" I don't go into labor - 1 week after my due date. I'm also currently breech - but I'm not too concerned since he literally just turned 2 days prior to my appt.

So my question - anyone successful VBAC with a baby 9lbs or bigger?

  • Nosoup had a 10+ baby (10 lb. 10 oz. maybe?).  I know there are others as well that have, but she pops into my head right now.

  • I have seen where several people on this board had vbacs with babies that were bigger than the first.

  • I had my VBAC one month ago and my VBAC baby was 2 pounds and 2 inches larger than my daughter (c-section baby).

At my ICAN meeting, a midwife explained it is actually easier to birth bigger babies because they put additional pressure on the cervix and it is easier for the uterus to "grab" them and squeeze them down. However, doctors get nervous about "big babies."

    You can do it!

Yep! He was 2.5 lbs heavier and 2 inches longer than my first, (who ended in a c-section after I pushed for 4+ hours, as he was posterior).

Personally, I'd refuse all growth u/s, but I am (and was) super paranoid about late-term u/s with a low-risk, healthy pregnancy. Your best bet with suspected macrosomia is to make sure you have a provider who is skilled in shoulder dystocia, just in case. And you have every right to ask for non-stress tests past 41 weeks, if you want to go longer than that. Good luck, it's definitely possible!

I know it's hard to turn down an u/s because you want to see the baby again but in this case I would.  My doc has mentioned we will want to do this at the end just to make sure the baby's size is good and I told him I'd rather not.  My mom had me vaginally and I was 11lbs 5oz...

  • My VBAC baby didn't end up being big...but all the Dr's told me he was going to be.  Every appointment they'd tell me that my VBAC attempt may fail because I was growing "another big one"  DS #1 was 8lbs5oz, so not huge, but decent sized.  I was measuring large at my last few appointments, at my 37 week appt. my Dr. just kinda shook her head when she measured me, I think I measured at 40 weeks.  I went into labor that night and had a 7lb 2oz baby.  Just goes to show you that you can't always trust all those measurements!
  • Hm, My vbac was 2 babies which equaled 11 pounds 11 ounces.

  • I had a Vbac with a 9 lb 4 oz 41 weeker, its funny how she fit and yet my 6lb odd was "too big".

  • DS #2 was 9 lbs 6 oz.  I was in labor for less than 9 hours.  I pushed for less than an hour.  I did have some tearing.  Nothing serious.  Recovery was so much easier than recovering from my c-section.

Our VBAC baby was 9 lbs.  I would refuse the growth u/s and not consent to scheduling a c/s.
