1st Trimester

Exercise....HELP!

I need inspiration and advice. Before getting pregnant I was running 1-3 miles at least 4-5 times a week. I was in the best shape ever and was working on starting a half marrithon. The first few weeks of my pregnancy I have no symptoms so I was maintaining my runs.....then it hit and it hit strong.....sickness...tired....weak...headaches...you name it...I had it. I am 11 weeks now almost 12 and am starting to feel better. I still get headaches but I am much better. Now I have lost all motivation and drive and stamina to exercise. I feel out of shape and need help! Does anyone have any advice? I know I can't start running again....that's not safe (I haven't for 2 months or more now)....what do I do?

Re: Exercise....HELP!

  • I'm kind of in the same boat (used to run, do nothing now) and I'm thinking that swimming and prenatal yoga are my best bets. Even a little walking is good. You're probably not as out of shape as you think you are! It's encouraging to hear that you feel better at 11/12 weeks. I'm starting Week 11 tomorrow and looking forward to any reduction in nausea and fatigue. I've been ready for trimester 2 for a while now!

  • I am in the same boat as you. I was either on the elliptical or running then a I just didn't have the energy to workout. So a couple of days ago my DH and I started going on nightly walks not the exercise I am used to but it feels good.
  • I'm also in a similar boat. Before the pregnancy I was taking rigorous dance classes and dong a good amount of strength training. I'm either in my seventh or eleventh week now (my sonogram tomorrow will fnally let me know) and my symptoms are subsiding. I feel like I could start exercising again, but the memories of all the stomach pain and nausea I was enduring weeks earlier are making me hesitant. Plus, it is hard to start up again after taking so much time off. I feel like I've been undoing all my past efforts. That said,  know I need to start exercising, even if dance and major strength training is out of the question. I don't really know what else to do though because I've been stuck on such a specific routine for so long. I've never done yoga, but I guess I'll look into prenatal yoga. And maybe some incline walking? I too, would love to hear suggestions from others.

  • I usually have a really rough patch around 1-2pm that lasts till dinner or bed but the nausea is getting less.....it's not much fun though. I really was excited about having a very fit pregnancy but feel disapointed....I am hoping that the second trimester brings me lots of energy and a drive to exercise again and not just sleep any chance I get. Well if you have any pointers or inspiration throw it my way.....hopefully you will be feeling better and more active soon! Whens your due date?
  • I just bought two DVDs 10 Minute Solution: Prenatal Pilates and Suzanne Bowen's Long and Lean Prenatal Workout.

After reading the reviews on Amazon they both seemed to fit what I wanted. Their is a lot out there for all levels, maybe there is something that you would like.

  • Did your doctor tell you not to run?  I'm not sure why it would be unsafe if you were running regularly before you got pregnant.  I've been battling a lack of motivation as well, but I try to get out for at least 30 min. at a time, jogging until I feel like I'm pushing too hard, and then finishing with a fast walk.  Some days I run all the way, others not.

As long as you don't have a specific condition where you shouldn't be running, it should be fine as long as you're comfortable with it.  Everything says you can technically run throughout the entire pregnancy (although most women stop after the 2nd trimester because the jostling makes you have to pee too much).

But I'm in the same boat as you, the symptoms are making it pretty impossible to do very much.  I'm just going to wait until I feel a little better and then start it up again.

  • I, too, worked out several days a week before I got the + test. I stopped everything for about 2 weeks (and also gained 3 lbs...). After reading a lot on this site and on others, I started walking and biking at  a moderate pace as often as I could stand to, usually 3-4 times/wk. Actually what has helped me the most is doing a leg lifting routine everyday at home - it raises my heart rate just enough to make me feel like I'm getting something out of it without making me worry that I'm going overboard. AND my legs have never looked better!

  •  I can totally relate to going from working out, cardio/lifing 5-6 days a week to a BFP and being so sick I can hardly get through work everyday..... :(Just the thought of a good work out make me feel awful.

Soon we will be feeling better and will be able to get back out and work out!
