I'm starting to think he will never STTN again :(

We've successfully deswaddled DS but with the exception of one or two nights he hasn't STTN since. It has been almost a month now and I'm soooo tired! Since midnight I've been up 3 times and at 5:30 DS has decided he is up for the day...yay. I feel like I've tried everything but maybe I haven't. We started him in a sleep sack but it is way too hot here and I think he wasn't sleeping well because he was hot, so we started putting him in lightweight pjs, a little improvement but nothing to write home about. I tried dreamfeeding him, which used to work when he was younger, no difference Indifferent Excuse my comparison but it's almost like when you are out partying (yes I know those days are long gone for us) and "you break the seal" and from then on you are peeing like every 5 mins, well it seems once DS wakes up to eat he is up every 1.5-2 hours after that for the rest of the night!

DS is a great napper, we have a great bedtime routine and he almost always goes to bed easily, I'm just at a loss for how to help him STTN anymore. Any suggestions for things I'm not doing/trying?? TIA!

  • Oy....I feel for ya...seriously.  We're still not doing that great at STTN.  DS always wakes up around 5am freaking out when there's not a pacifier in his mouth.

I read that between 4a-5a is the lightest sleep, and it can take up to an hour to get back to sleep.  This is very true for us.  DS woke up at 4:30am.  I put his paci, turned on the mobile, and he was up in 20 minutes probably.  I do this a few times, and then he woke up at about 7ish.  It's just something I have to "fight".

What about a white noise machine?  A mobile that plays music?

I don't feed DS when he's doing this.  I also don't change him or anything like that.

Have you tried starting bed time earlier?

We're still using the FP seahorse, which still works most of the time. I also play pacifier tag with him but usually he won't take any substitute but a boob Tongue Tied I have tried starting bedtime earlier but he usually just hangs out till his bedtime, he goes down at 8 like clockwork--seriously he can be giggling and squirming around and the second the clock strikes 8 he is out like a light. I don't know, I'm trying just to suck it up but these 2 hr stretches of sleep I'm getting are starting to screw with my mind Tongue Tied
  • Try a fan. My DS sleeps sooooo much better with constant noise, not just long enough to fall asleep. At naps I didn't have a fan on and he'd only sleep 45 mins to an hour max, turned on a fan or the radio, van 3 hour naps! We've just started unswaddling his arms but he's still in the sack with the wings around his waist.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Landon is a horrible napper, but STTN pretty well.

We turn the ceiling fan on low. I think when he wakes up in the morning he sometimes watches it until he falls back asleep.

I didn't know that 5am was a light sleep time for lots of babes... it definately is for Landon. He will sleep from about 7:30pm to 5:15- 5:30am and then he's up to eat. I put him back in the crib because I don't want him to think it's time to get up. He usually talks for 20 mins and then falls asleep until 7 or so, but sometimes he's up for the day.

  • Are you sure he was ready to be deswaddled? I've been trying with DS. If he is swaddled, he'll sleep through the night. If he is not, he'll keep waking up. I know they say to stop swaddling when they start to roll. DS has been rolling for over a month now but doesn't even attempt it when swaddled.

I "think" he was ready. We had tried multiple times without success and this time he actually slept fine without it and doesn't wake up 30 mins after I put him down like he did the other times we tried. We also didn't really have a choice because he was only letting us swaddle him in the zip up swaddle pod (not the velcro ones) and the one we have is way to small and he was breaking out of it. We also have a woombie for bigger babies but the material is too heavy and he would sweat like crazy in it. Right after we deswaddled him he went through a pretty big growth spurt and was waking to feed during that. Since then he just can't seem to get back to STTN. Hopefully he will someday.

DD is doing this, waking up 3-5 times a night to eat (I EBF) since last weekend. I'm attributing it to 4 month wakeful. I hope we both get some sleep soon!

  • Can you try swaddling with one arm out? We use a halo sleep sack and I swaddle him under his arms. He doesn't totally sttn usually, but we can usually go until 4:30 which isn't bad imo.

  • We're sort of dealing with the same thing. When DS was 2 months he started STTN (about 8 hours straight). When he hit 3 months, he started waking up multiple times through the night again. Thankfully it coincided with the end of the school year for me... now I'm off for summer and can sleep late if I need to. Now I'm lucky if he sleeps a 6 hour stretch, but usually it's more like 4-5. And Erin, like you said in your OP, once he wakes up the first time, he's up every couple hours.

Thankfully since I'm BFing and he's still in a co-sleeper bassinet, it's not too bad... I don't have to fully wake up to feed him. And he falls back to sleep at the boob. We wanted to start putting him in the crib but now I feel like it's just going to be more aggravation for me.

It's the normal 4 month thing mama. My babies STTN more now since starting solids. Talk to their doctor.
