Pregnant after 35

first time mom with NT test questions and opinions needed

Good Morning everyone.  I am a first time mom, (35), will be 36 on delivery.  We have had a semi normal pregnancy i guess, i just had low progesterone and i had to take prometrium twice daily for a few weeks.  I am now off that.  I did go for my first trimester screening yesterday.  I got some numbers and wanted to get some opinions from you all.  My husband and I are very new to this and would love some feedback.

Our NT scan resulted in a 1.8MM  fold behind the neck and the crown to rump length was 78.8 MM.  They saw a "great" nose bone and the heart beat was kicking at about 150 BPM.  They did the blood test as well (pricked my finger), however i wont get those results until next week sometime.

Are these numbers good?  I am as listed on my Ultrasound 13 weeks 2 days pregnant but they said I could be about 13 weeks 4 days or so.

If these numbers are good, does this usually mean our blood test will be ok as well?  The Dr told us that the trisomy concerns usually go out the window at the end of teh first trimester and since our little one was growing so well, that is a good sign.  We just dont know what to think.  Will our numbers for DS likely be low?  We have no chromosome disorders in our immediate family.  no cleft pal, downs, MR, etc.

Please share your stories or insight.

  • Hello and congrats on your pregnancy. I'm no expert (and I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback here)--but I remember hearing that anything less than 2mm on the neck fold was good news. I'm not sure about the length measurement. And as for the other numbers, no idea. But so far it sounds pretty good! It's hard to be patient, that's for sure. I had relatively low #'s on my NST (like 1 in 500 for Down's). I'm 38. We went ahead and did the amnio to be sure and for peace of mind. It was an easy procedure and came back totally negative for anything. Good luck on your screenings/tests. Hope you find out soon!

  • There are 3 parts to the risk assessment - your risk based on age alone; what they see on the scan; and what your bloodwork says.  Your age based risk is what it is.  Your scan info looks good.  But I think you're just going to have to wait on the bloodwork to know for sure.  So far, so good though!  Think happy thoughts!

The waiting and all of the what ifs and imagining worst case scenarios was the worst part for me.

  • If the scan shows a nasal bone that is great. Down's kids don't have nasal bones.
  • It sounds encouraging!  The nasal bone is a very good thing!

  • Yes it sounds like everything is fine. Your doctor should go into more detail with you on what everything means from the numbers. Some doctors don't want to scare you with a bunch of data and will tell you only "that everything looks fine."

My NT scan was within normal measurements and the numbers were in my favor. But understand I did not want a ton of details.

  • Wow - you got a lot of information from your doctor. Mine didn't give me any of that information. I was just given a phone call after the bloodwork came back (but it was more than a pin prick, it was a full vial (sp?) or two) that our Downs odds were 1 in 40. We freaked out at first, but then decided against the amnio. We wouldn't abort so it is what it is.

I actually wish now that we didn't have the testing done to begin with. It really puts a damper on what should be an exciting time.
