thrush related-boiling/sterilizing bottles

Hello Mommies,

I read that dr sears recommends boiling bottles and pacis for 20 minutes to get rid of all the thrush causing fungi. How do you boil/ sterilize your bottles? Do you have a sterilizer/ do you boil them in a pot on a stove or do you use the microwave?

Finally-if sterilizing in the microwave- do you set it for 20 minutes on high? It just seems a little excessive to me but then I wouldn't want to make a mistake here.

TIA!

Re: thrush related-boiling/sterilizing bottles

  • The first time he uses a bottle or paci I boil water and put the things in the water then turn the heat off. I let it sit in the water for 20 mins then take it out and let it dry. After the first use I hand wash all his bottles and pacis. He hasn't had thrush so it must work!

  • When we had thrush I boiled pacis, bottles and pump parts once a day on the stovetop for 20 minutes - a rolling boil the whole time. I never used the microwave but the stovetop method seemed to do the trick.

This.  20 minutes on stovetop.  Don't use the bags says a LC who I talked to since it requires a more aggressive approach.  Thrush SUCKS!  We are battling it now!

Putting the bottles, etc in the dishwasher will sterilize them too. We have a basket for the nipples and other small parts that we use for it.
