I've read it was possible, but today we actually did it! S was getting squirmy on my hip, so DH spotted me while I scooted him around. Not as high as in a wrap, but he looks happy
It was actually more comfortable for me than I thought it would be. Although my right arm was completely immobilized because the material went from my shoulder to my elbow. I don't see us doing it too often -- like you said, in a pinch -- but it's good to know we can!
When I wear my daughter in this hold my rings stay up at my shoulder like with the other holds, maybe that is why your arm wasn't free? I use this hold and my arms both are free.....

I'll try it to do it that way next time. This time I had no idea was I was doing really and just scooted everything -- DS and the sling -- around my back. Are you able to slide your LO around without moving the sling, or do you change where the rings start out initially? Thanks!

Now that she is older I put her piggy back than put the sling over her, when I started the back hold I would put her in a hip carry with the rings high and then scoot her on to my back (this is easier when they can't hold onto you as good) It took a few tries the first time but I really wanted to use that carry so I practiced until I got it.
I had a video that came with my sling I am a very visual person it helped me to see it!

In order to do a back carry with the rings at her shoulder, she'll have to start with a hip carry with the rings in the "wrong" position--behind her shoulder. The rings are always going to whenever the LO is scooted around.
ETA: Never mind. I hadn't seen the post with the video. I'm saying what you already pointed out.

Re: AW -- back carry in ring sling
Do it, momma! I've worn DD in a back carry in a ring sling...in a pinch. I didn't love it, though.
S does look VERY happy! How did it work out for you?
