Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone get a massage in their first tri?

My best friend (who doesn't know that I am pregnant yet) got me a gift certificate for Christmas for a massage and pedicure.  Well, we haven't been able to make it til this weekend.  I didn't even think it would matter to get a regular massage this early, but I called and they said I did need a prenatal.  Well, now I am seeing on both their website and random places on the internet that you should wait til after your first trimester is over.  I'll be 12 weeks this Tuesday, but I know there are some conflicting opinions as to what week the second trimester actually begins.  And, this being Saturday, I can't call my Doctor and ask.  So, did any of you guys get one? Or have any insight on it??

  • I had many places refuse to massage until I was way way out of my frist tri, I would just wait it out a few more weeks, but thats just me......

  • It's fine. The concern is that rubbing the ankles can cause contractions. But, you'd have to rub REALLY hard for a long amount of time for this to happen.

Just don't get a deep tissue massage, and you'll be fine. n other words, if the pressure hurts, then tell the person to back off a bit.

I got a bunch throughout this PG.

Massage Envy doesn't have the "no massages" in first tri rule. That rule is more to cover the business than anything else so that they don't get sued if you miscarry. Rather, Massage Envy has you sign a release that says they assume no liability

  • No massages until after your first trimester!  I've always seen that places specifically say that in their brochures.  I wouldn't take the chance.  I counted my first trimester as being over once I was 13w3d.

  • Another lady mentioned this as well the other day.  It sounds like most spas won't do a massage in the first trimester.  If it were me, I would wait until I had passed the latest calculation for the end of the 1st tri, but I am overly cautious.  Can you go for a mani/pedi or some other spa treatment instead?

  • When I went to sign myself up for a prenatal in 2nd Tri, the first question out of every massage places mouth when I asked for prenatal was if I was out of 1st Tri.  They wouldn't touch me with a 10 foot pole if I wasn't at least that far along.

I believe its just a matter of there being certain places they could touch that can bring on contractions and such.  If you've waited this long, would waiting a couple more weeks be possible?

  • Thanks.  I called the spa and asked her, she said there is no reason I shouldn't be able to get a massage at any point during pregnancy unless I've already had complications, which, since I've had spotting due to the subchorionic hemorrhage we decided I would wait and ask my Dr.

The bad part of the whole thing...I called my best friend to tell her I had to cancel b/c they wouldn't let me get a massage b/c I had "extinuating circumstances" and she didn't even ask me if I was pregnant...or what those circumstances were!! And she knows we were supposed to start IUI's in June, and that we've been trying for years. She's always been pretty self absorbed, but I think this one takes the cake for me.

Vent over. Thanks for the advice!! =]
