2nd Trimester

Suspicious mole

Get it checked out now or wait 4 more months?

It's the kind that should be removed but usually isn't indicative of the worse forms of skin cancer, so no, waiting 4 months wouldn't be crazy or irresponsible. And skin changes are normal during pregnancy, so I'm not even sure a derm would do anything but wait and see.

I have no problem setting up an appt with a dermatologist, but I'm just wondering if they'd do anything while I'm pregnant. I'd hate to pay yet another doctor fee only to hear "Wait till November."

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Re: Suspicious mole

  • I'd do it now. I don't know of any reason they couldn't do it while you're pregnant, and the sooner the better with those.

  • Because I have already had one basal cell skin cancer, I see my dermatologist every 6mo typically, but he sees me every 4mo when pregnant, and more frequently if there is something suspect. Because of the hormones of pregnancy cancers can grow much more quickly than they normally would, so it's important to get anything suspicious checked out. My last check I had a spot he wasn't sure about, so he told me to go back in just 2 months to have it checked again. It doesn't hurt to at least have it monitored closely. I think you should go.

  • I had a couple of moles that changed a lot during pregnancy and had to be removed. Luckily they werent cancerous, but I think you should be checked out just to be safe.

  • I just had a mole removed a few weeks ago... My OB referred me to a dermatologist because it was a new mole.  The derm's thought was "better in a jar than on you" he also said that the material they use to numb the area is safe to use while pregnant.

So I would go... there's nothing wrong with a little information :)

  • with my last pregnancy i had a suspicious mole as well.  i went ahead and saw the doctor and he biopsied it.  he wanted to remove it but gave me the choice on when i wanted to get it removed.  i think i waited 3 weeks after delivering.  i don't know if you had a deductible or not but if you are due before the end of the year you might as well get it done as most meet it when having a baby.

  • I would say definitely have it checked out.  I went in to the dermatologist for a suspicious spot and he biopsied it.  It came back positive for basal cell and I had to have it removed.  It was done under local anesthesia and completely safe for the baby.  It's better to be safe than sorry!
  • my sister had them removed, even though they were not dangoures.
  • Since I became pregnant I noticed a few new dark freckles have appeared and my birth mark has gotten a bit darker too. I honestly didnt think about it being a problem for me because I've had a lot of skin changes since I found out I was pregnant.
I guess either way I would suggest calling the dermatologist or your OB first to see if its important to go in right away or if it's cool to hold off. I mean the phone call is free and you dont have to spend your time going in for nothing if they say its not a big deal. And if they want ya to come in then at least you called and confirmed first :)

  • Please have it checked! I lost my dad to melanoma when I was 12 and he was 33. It is very serious. I get checked every 6 months.

Thanks, everybody. I'll call my dermatologist and get it looked at. Thanks!
