Anna7602

Fist, hopefully I got the numbers after name right. Anyway, I saw you have traveled a lot with your dd in the vax post. I'm curious, where have you gone. DH and I were huge travelers pre-baby ad would like to continue to be, but are just trying to figure out exactly where we could go with a LO. Europe seems easy enough, but based on the diseases you talked about I'm guessing that's not where you went. Anyway, would just love some inspiration!

Re: Anna7602

  • Hi. On the international front, I've taken DD to England, France, Cuba and Argentina. The dengue fever concern was in Cuba, where there was a huge outbreak of it when we went.

Places on our someday list (that I mentioned avoiding because of malaria & yellow fever in a post below): Mozambique and the Brazilian Amazon. I love other parts of Brazil, like Rio, where you don't need to worry about tropical diseases. I think it would be a great place to hang out with a child.

Our most likely next big trip with DD is either Turkey or Corsica.

  • We are thinking of either Budapest (+ an undetermined city) or Spain when he is about 9 months (though now I needto look into this measles thing). Most people think we are crazy, but I want him to start seeing the world young. I also want to take him to Africa, but I'm guessing that is many years away. Any tips for international travel with a little one?

Biggest tip: between about 11 months-18 months is the easiest to travel anywhere. DD would eat anything at that age, but was also BFing so in a pinch (if restaurants were closed or something), I could nurse her. And she would fall asleep in the Ergo or stroller anywhere without getting fussy. Plus, she still liked being worn and I didn't need to worry about her running off anywhere in a public place or being too tired to walk, yet not wanting to get into a carrier or stroller.

Before 11 months and after 18 months, the food & sleeping things were a little trickier. After 18 months specifically she was more capricious about things having to be a certain way- the food she wanted or the toys she suddenly missed from home or not wanting to leave a particular park/museum/etc. when I was ready to go. We've gotten through these things anyway and won't let that stop us, but I really wish I'd gone even more places with her before 18 months.

It all depends on your child's temperament, of course, and I can only speak to my experience with DD, but I feel like because we've traveled so much since a young age, she is awesome on airplanes and with long flights. I've never had to use a DVD player with her on a plane or train, she's pretty good at entertaining herself with snacks, coloring books and toys, or with sleeping on night flights.

  • Anna has a lot of really good advice but I just wanted to add that we took DD to China (Shanghai and Hangzhou) when she was 10 months. It was much easier than I had thought because she was still easy to carry in the wrap and Beco (a stroller wasn't really an option there, we left it at home and didn't regret it). BFing and a not so mobile baby is a really good combination for traveling. I never had to worry about getting her specific food (I did bring packets of oat meal and loads of rice crackers to have ready).

I have been to Budapest and although it is a nice place, I found it a bit too touristy. I can really recommend a smaller town in Hungary called Brasov. It was a lovely town, very pretty and big enough for lots of things to do. It is convenient to go there by train from Budapest. Very green and nice people. It has a funicular tram to the mountains with some nice trails for walking down again if so inclined.

    Good luck with it!
