Food Allergy

Dairy confirmed and Rice??

I meant to update from our 1st allergy appt on Tuesday, but life got in the way.

Anyways, the appt was long.  Dr. was doing rounds at the hospital so he was running late which made it just that much longer.  DD did pretty well.  They only did a skin test, no blood draw.   She was tested for cows milk, soy, wheat, rice, egg white and two more that I can't remember right now... did not test for peanuts or tree nuts though.  I asked and he said that she should just avoid them completely anyways until at least 12 or 18 months.

Results confirmed cows milk allergy and she also reacted to rice.   Dr. is confident that she will grow out of the cows milk allegy and wants to do a milk challenge in 6 months.  In the meantime since she is BF, I will be eliminating all dairy from my diet.

As for the rice, he said that although she appears to have an allergy, we don't need to worry about eliminating it from her diet.  ???  I have been wondering about rice though because when she first started solids at 6 months (rice cereal) her face broke out in the worst rash/eczema that just wouldn't go away and it just seemed way too much of a coincidence to not be related.  But my pedi assured me that "rice allergies are extremely rare" so that couldn't be it.

Anyone here dealing with a rice allergy?  I have found very little information about it online.  Of course the puffs that she eats every day have rice as the first ingredient listed.

Re: Dairy confirmed and Rice??

  • We had a confirmed rice allergy at 9 months.  Why would they tell you to give it to her?!  That is absurd.

Here are the puffs we have given my daughter.

    https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Graduates-Crunchies-Cinnamon-Maple/dp/B002Q3LLSY

They are corn-based.  We were dealing with oat and rice, and this is the only thing we could find.

She was just retested two weeks ago and she has outgrown it.  We are introducing it now.  Rice allergies are rare, but if you know she is allergic, avoid it!!!  I still can't believe they said not to eliminate it.

  • just because an allergy is rare, doesn't mean your child can't be severely allergic to it.  I would be pissed if a doctor told me it's rare so that couldn't be it.   I have heard of people with a rice allergy (miller, is it your DD?).

Did he request a blood test? if not, i would call and request one. a skin test has many false positives so i would love to know what the levels are with a RAST test are.

Also, he should have tested for a nut allergy. Knowing is so good. Yes, you can avoid, but if there is a known allergy, you avoid it much more.

That's what I thought!  He seemed pretty lax about the whole thing.  Thanks for the link!  I will check those out.   And so glad your DD outgrew her rice allergy!

No blood test requested. Never thought about false positives.  I agree with wanting to know about a nut allergy, I really should have pushed for it.  You guys are definitely reminding me that I really need to advocate harder for my baby girl.  Should I try to find a new allergist?

I did.  I waited a while though, but eventually i did and i'm so much happier with this one.  I would totally get her a blood test asap or you can wait until her 12 month appt b/c she will have her blood drawn then also, so they can use the same blood to test for allergies.. so she's not poked multiple times.

  • As far as the rice allergy goes, it would be one thing if she tested postive, but did not have a reaction.  However, since she had a reaction and that promted the testing and she tested postive then I would think it would mean that she is allergic to it.  Now, maybe she meant the rice doesn't transmit through bm like other things and that is why you don't have to watch that intake, but I don't know.  That seems very odd to me.

I will just give you second view on the peanut/nut testing.  My youngest son just got testing done.  When I asked the dr.if he would test for peanuts/tree nuts he asked if he had even had them before.  He hasn't b/c my dd is allergic to peanuts.  He said, that iho he would give him a very small amount and keep on working our way up to bigger amounts (if he doesn't have any reaction) but if he does then he will test him.  The theory behind it is, to test something he has never had before, you can get false postives.  The blood test will come back that are allergic, but the body never reacts to it.  So, why stick a kid with a dx of an allergy if they have never reacted to it before.  At first, I will admitt I was a bit skeptical, but I have done more research talk to some other people about it.. and it kind of makes sense to me.  I am assuming your allergist only tested your dd for the things you know she reacted to right? Now, if your dd has had eczema her whole life, and couldn't pin point what was causing it, that is a stronger reason to test for the full gammit (like the top 8 allergens).  Or, if you take everything out of her your diet and her diet that she allergic to, and she is still having reactions then I would get her tested.  So, I know some may not agree with me, but thats my view on the testing.

He said he was testing for what she reacted to and also the alternatives to cows milk.  I asked for egg to be added because I was nervous about introducing it, but wanted to soon.  I guess I was hoping that he would at least test for tree nuts so I could see if Almond Milk would be an option for us after she turns a year.

I do see where you are coming from and it does make some sense.  If after I cut out dairy from my diet and then rice from hers and her eczema doesn't improve then I will ask for further testing prior to our next appt.

    I appreciate your input.

  • I don't have much to add, just that maybe you should try and find another allergist, especially if your LO had a reaction (ezcema/rash) after eating rice AND came up positive on her test.  I wouldn't give it to her again!  My LO is allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, and tomatoes.  I'm still BFing him and he'll be one in another few weeks.  My allergist said to trial milk with him at a year and bring him in for testing.
