Preemies

So, I talked to my pedi yesterday about daycare

and she said that in home daycare ? better with regard to germs.  In fact, they can be worse because the age groups are more mixed and you have older kids interacting (read: getting their grubby hands and faces in the babies faces).

So, we are going to still go with our center.  It is an awesome place and H is in the same building.

I know a lot of you can stay home with your LOs, which is awesome.  But, we just can't do it.  12 weeks has been pretty hard on our budget (because I was 100% unpaid).

He's not going to daycare until November (H's parents are coming August 1st for 6-8 weeks, then H will take 4 weeks off, then my mom and a friend are going to do the last 2 weeks).

Pedi is going to start the approval process for the synagis shot so we can start them in November.  I'm glad I'd researched it and brought it up.  She didn't think he would qualify, but then I went down the list of reasons that he did (born at 31 weeks, on a monitor still, and going to a center daycare).  She said that sometimes even thought they fall in the guidelines that insurance still won't pay for it.  But, if that happens H will file a grievance because he does meet the guidelines.  Hopefully it will work out.

  • Katie, I worked at daycares for over 11 years. I jumped ship and returned to waitressing a few years ago, but am usually pretty good when it comes to questions about them because I worked at a variety (low income/corporate/ivy league co-ops). Feel confident that centers are indeed 'more germ free'! If you have any questions that you think I might be able to help with always feel free to ask :)

  • Good luck with the Synagis! If it gets denied, just keep appealing! our insurance didn't ever end up covering it for ds & I wish that I had appealed it one more time cause he ended up with RSV & back in the hospital for weeks! I was (and still am) so livid with our insurance company for putting us in that position! He should have more than qualified for it, they just didn't want to pay.

  • I agree with urbanflowerpot, it sounds like you found a great center that you can and should feel comfortable in! It's awesome that your DH will be so close as well. Ditto pp about fighting for synagis, start early and always ask to speak to a rapid resolution specialist, that is just about the only way we get anything done with our insurance! Good luck!
