This isn't really a FA question so feel free to avoid.. (but it is regarding food)
So i have a house that is super safe for my son (milk/soy/eggs/peanut free). .
I'm 17 weeks pregnant and I just got a call from my doc that i failed my 1 hour glucose test
and I'm pretty sure i will fail the 3 hour test as well.
So, when i had GD with my first pregnancy i ate bocca (soy) burgers 3 x a day (pretty much 4 to 6 patties a day). I'm really trying to change it up a big this time so that i eat in moderation hoping that this baby does not have FA.. So i've also been avoiding bocca burgers since they have GMO and not the healthiest choice (i do sometimes eat the organic bocca burgers).
My question is - what the hell do i eat now? i don't eat meat and i don't eat eggs (sometimes i'll eat one at work) and i don't eat dairy. Everything else has carbs which i have to avoid.
Should i go see a nutritionist? i really don't want to spend the money on one.
Re: GD + FA = Fail.. what do I eat?
HUGS!!!!
I too had GD. I failed by 6 points. My nurse told me that before you take your test do not eat fruit. Eat as much lean protein and veggies as you can. At my hospital, if you are diagnosed with GD a nutritionist is assigned to you to explain your goals. basically no fruit for breakfast, and no more than a certain amount of carbs each meal, I lived off of baked chicken, nuts and beans. I also ate a lot of chili and salads. Crystal light was my only drink other than water. You will get through it!
Welcome to the world of EXTREMELY limited diets. Repeat: "this is a short term visit, not a long term stay" until you catch your breath.
You may find a nutritionist helpful. Mostly, I do not. I get the glassy look in their eyes before they start telling me how I'll be dead in weeks if I adhere to my diet. Still standing.
How does seitan (wheat gluten) strike you? It's available soy free and packs a veggie protein punch (90 cals 3g carbs 18g protein in white wave foods traditional). Quorn has also started making mycoprotein (from mushrooms) available in the states...but their meat substitutes all have powdered egg white in them, so this would be strictly a work food for you. The upshot is for 80 cals and 5g total carbs (2 of fiber), you get 11g of faux chickeney protien.
That's just off the top of my head. I have an extremely fragile gut and decades of practice trying to keep it happy and healthy. Feel free to contact me if you think I can help. I'd love to try.
thank you ladies!
i knew this was coming and last time wasn't so bad b/c i just had dairy, bocca burgers and PB.. every day. now i have to avoid most of those (which btw -i think my son outgrew his soy! yay)
It would be easy if i ate meat.. i do eat fish so that's my once a week meal..
i do like seitan.. sometimes.. i guess it depends how its made. i have had some bad cooked seitan and some really delish ones. I should learn how to make it myself.
And no insulin last time, just had to prick myself in the finger. I can't imagine having to use insulin.. i give credit to anyone that does..
I started a little journal of thinks i can eat and i'll alternate it so that i'm not eating the same thing every day. Last time i did the diet for 13 weeks (lost 40lbs) and now i have to be on it for 23 weeks.. i might disappear!
anyways -all of your tips are great.. thanks
