Moms w/kids 3+ years apart (double stroller ?)

DS and new baby will be almost exactly 3.5 years apart.  As of right now, DS rarely rides in a stroller.  When we go shopping, he wants to walk.  When we go for walks (which we haven't in a really long time because, did ya know - it's damn hot outside!  and I'm pregnant.) he will ride in the stroller some, but really loves to get out and push the empty stroller himself.

So, I'm wondering if we really need to consider a double stroller (we were looking on CL for double joggers, although we don't jog much at all, but we do take lots of walks when the weather is nicer).  It will be mid-late december when this baby is born, so I'm sure there will be no walks with baby for several months.  Plus, most joggers aren't rated for babies under 6mo, right (or did I dream that)?  So by then, DS will be pushing 4 years old.  I'm thinking he will either want nothing to do with a stroller by then, or he will do a 180 and want to ride in a stroller just like the baby is.  I'm thinking we would surely want to have a stroller option for him if we are at a festival/day long outing, or something like that (I think) but I have no idea how he will want to handle neighborhood walks. So, if your kids are this far apart (or close to it), did you bother getting a double stroller or double jogger, and how long did you (or do you think you will) need it before your older DC wanted nothing to do with strollers?  Was it worth it?

  • not me, but a friend of mine has 2 kids just under 4 yr apart and they did not get a double stroller. i have not heard her regret that decision or wish she had gotten a double. they mostly do walks to the park and the older one usually rides his scooter, bike, or walks himself. occasionally i've seen him riding on the front of the single stroller when he's really wanted to, but that's rare...and come to think of it, that was early on when the baby was new :) . so it's seemed to work out fine for them without one!

  • We did not get a double stroller.  Abby never rode in a stroller at that point anyway though, so I never even considered one really.  I did think about one of those sit and stand strollers, but never got one.  It was never an issue.  Even when we go to festivals, etc Abby walks the whole time.
  • We bought a sit n stand and I don't know what I would do without it. My son was 3 when dd was born and we have used it almost every single day! He still gets tired of walking too.

My children are 3 years apart (almost to the day).  We only use a stroller for DD.  DS walks.  I have a Joovy Caboose that has a little seat behind that main seat. I have used that on long outings if DS gets tired, but honestly he's big enough to walk.  We have no plans to get a true double stroller.

My two are exactly 3.5 years apart, and we did not do the double stroller. Meredith rarely wanted to ride in one, and in the rare occasions when she did, I would wear Alex in the sling or k'tan wrap, and she would ride.

The only time a double stroller would have been nice is for very long walks. Meredith isn't really a "walk for 3 miles" kind of girl yet, and her bike skills aren't quite there yet either, so I haven't been able to take both kids out for long walks so I can exercise.
