1st bday for DS1 while PG

Hi,

I had a pretty complicated PG with DS1, so I'm anticipating that I'll have the same this time around, just to be prepared. Before we found out that I was pregnant we were planning on going to my parent's house in FL and having a big 1st birthday by the beach and probably going to Disney World. Now, I'm not too sure how thats going to work out, especially since I'll be just entering my 3rd tri and thats when things got a little crazy last time around.

Anyone else celebrate a 1st Bday while you were pg with #2? Any ideas? All of our families would have to travel,(MN and FL and we're in VA), and it gets too cold for anything outdoors.

My DD turns 1 on 8/6 and I will be just shy of 30 weeks at her party. Planning it (mostly alone because DH works a lot) and keeping up with her hasn't been so bad. But I may be singing a different tune come August! I do think it's pretty funny that I will be pregnant at her birthday and almost the same number of weeks as I was at her shower just last year! My pregnancies were/are pretty easy so I would travel no problem, but I would see what your dr suggests and how you feel closer to the time of your LO's party.

  • I did. I was due a few weeks after DS turned one. I did the party a few weeks before his actual bday so I wasnt too close to the end.

We rented a hall and had about 40 people.

In hindsight, I wouldnt do that big a party again. It was exhausting doing everything for the party in terms of decorating/food and being that pregnant, and on top of that DS was in the midst of this super clingy phase and had "stranger danger", so he was terrified to leave my arms for the first few hours. Near the end, he started eating some cake and playing with the other kids, but for most of it he was not fun at all.

I think a first birthday party is more for the parents than for the child, so don't feel obligated to do anything. If you want to have all your family travel and host a big party, that's fine but if you want to do something low key at home that's fine too.

  • Thanks for your advice! I guess this really stems from a feeling that DS will be 'jipped' of a big first birthday. I'm sure that some close family members will fly out if need be.

  • DS turns one in Sept & I'll be 32 weeks pregnant. I'm doing as much as I can now while I'm still comfortable. Invitations are done, decorations are almost finished and I'm working on planning food and favors. (I'm a big DIYer.) I think that getting everything done early (and making good lists!) will make the day of the party run fairly smoothly.

  • I'm throwing DD's 1st birthday party next month but am only in my 1st tri.  We are just having a small party at home.  Personally I don't think it's necessary to have a big 1st bday party, its more overwhelming for the child and more $$$ and time for me.  Also I think that Disney is a very stressful exhausting place to travel even when you're not pregnant and without children.  I definitely wouldn't travel there in the 3rd tri.  If you are set on going, I would travel earlier, middle of 2nd trimester.  It doesn't matter if you have DS's bday party early, its certainly understandable since you live far away.
