Ummm....

I have been against co-sleeping from the beginning. But the last week I can't get my kid to go to sleep for ANYTHING until 1am or 2am. Nothing works.

So the last two nights I put him in bed with us, and have gotten 9+ hours of sleep. Surprise

Idk if I should keep doing this or not!

Re: Ummm....

  • I was against co-sleeping as well, but as a last resort a couple times i've brought LO to bed with me for an extra couple hours of sleep. I still am paranoid and worry the entire time.

I say if you do it safe and your smart about it, and your LO sleeps for 9hrs straight, its worth it.

  • Thanks! Yeah, I am super paranoid about it and think we do it pretty 'safe'. I just worry that he's going to be in my bed forever if I keep doing it. The sleep is lovely though.

  • He won't do it forever, I promise. You do what works for you - at this point in time. Next week, he may hate being in your bed. Who knows!

I find it so annoying when people say they won't co-sleep simply because they don't want a toddler in their bed. it is like EVERYTHING else baby-related - to change something, it takes some work. But this is not a BAD thing, it just just part of life.

Baby takes a bottle? Guess what, you will have to wean to a cup one day. Does that mean you don't use a bottle EVER? No.

Baby takes a paci? Same thing, one day you will have to break that habit.

    Swaddling? Same thing.

My DD1 NEVER ever co-slept with us as a baby. And she STILL went through a stage in toddler-hood where she ended up in bed with us every night. But it was short-lived, and she is in HER bed every night again. I am sure she will go through that stage again one day, and we will make it through. it is never forever, and it is never traumatic for any of us.

I bed share with my LO, have since day 1. It works for me and her. Makes BFing a cinch and I adore snuggling with her every night. I am transitioning her to the co-sleeper (outside our bed) and then will transition to crib. I am actually dragging my feet on the transitioning, I miss her when she is not with me! She is fine with the change though!

(BTW - I was not ranting at you about co-sleeping, it was a general "you" and not directed at you OP. :) )

  • Since I've gone back to work, middle-of-the-night feedings have been exhausting.  It's so much easier to nurse DD and let her sleep in our bed rather than trying to force her to fall back asleep in her bassinet (which can take an hour).  Lately, she's slept in her bassinet from 7:30 to 1:30 or so and then with me in bed for the next several hours.  She sleeps a lot later in the morning when she's in our bed (7 or 8 rather than 5 or 5:30)!

  • I posted about this the other day - that I never thought I would say that I loved co-sleeping. I was against it at first, I was afraid of it. But now I bring DS into bed with me around 6am when he gets up for the second time and we sleep in until 9 or 10. I do it safely, and I love the extra snuggle time. I've been doing it for about a month now, and you will get over the worry about it. It took me about a week or so until I got over it. Now I just enjoy the extra sleep and cuddles.

  • You do what you gotta.

As long as you're taking the proper precautions, it's fine. Our routine at the moment is that the baby sleeps in his crib until his first night feed (anywhere between 1 am and 4 am). I side-lie feed him, we fall asleep, and on a good night, we keep that up until about 9 am. It works for now, mostly. I've had very few days where I've been super tired.

  • Keep it up! I co-sleep when dd gets up around 5 am, and she'll sleep until noon if I let her, but in bed with me!! So co-sleeping gets me up to 12 hours of sleep if I want it! I fully support it!

  • DD sleeps he first half the night in the co-sleeper, when she's dead to the world, and with me either in bed or on the couch the rest of the night/early morning.I am meticulously safe about it and it makes us both happy.    She sleeps 5x as long with me than when I keep trying to put her back in the co-sleeper and I'll take whatever sleep I can get.
