2nd Trimester

i knew this was coming :(

So pre-pregnancy i was definetly a skinny girl. now at 22wks its like my stomach popped out over night and shorts i fit into last weekend now are too tight. I knew this was gonna happen but it kind of blows it had to happen overnight.

Re: i knew this was coming :(

you have to own more than one pair of shorts, or maybe even a dress? I mean, really!? We all know we're pregnant, a bump will happen at sometime.

  • 22 wks and just now growing out of pre-prego clothes? I've been in maternity clothes since 18 wks. And grew out of my skinny pants at about 15 wks. Be happy!! It means your baby is growning. If you still fit into your skinny pants much longer, I'd worry that there was something wrong.Big Smile Now you get to have fun dressing the bump and showing it off.

  • I am going to get flammed for this and that's okay because I've struggled for years over my weight so my feelings are completely legit.

I hate getting bigger.  Hate it.  I don't like having to buy a bigger size clothing, I don't like not fitting in the clothes that I used to wear.  It's frustrating.  Luckily, because I've never liked the way I would get when I was bloated (from my period) I would buy very flowy shirts, these came in handy for my first pregnancy and plan on doing it with my second as well.

It sucks not fitting into your clothing.  But you suck it up because you know your belly is a temporary little home for a wonderful one of the most imporant person in your life.  ...But it still doesn't change how you feel about yourself.

No flaming here! I could have written all of that myself. I am outrageously excited for this baby, but It's very hard when you have struggled with weight your entire life.

However- the OP wasn't talking about dealing with weight/self esteem/body issues, as 'shes always been a skinny person'. Just complaining about not having clothes that fit and not having the time to shop for more, so I think those are completely unrelated.

  • You are definitely not alone.  I went on holidays last week and was still wearing my bikini (I just looked slightly bloated), none of my family or friends could believe how small I was.  By the next weekend I definitely grew a belly, my husband even noticed after not seeing me for 4 days.  I'm sure I won't be fitting into my bikini now, I'm not even going to attempt to try.  I wish it was more gradual too but it's kind of exciting that people that didn't know I was pregnant are now asking me when I'm due!

  • ha im in the same boat too. i'm petite and when everyone sees me (im 20 wks 1 d) they all seemed shocked im not due until 12/1 :(

  • You're 22 weeks pregnant and you don't have any maternity clothes yet?
  • I know exactly how it feels.  I'm not showing just yet, but I know it's coming...this pregnancy was completely unexpected, actually I freaked out and cried when I found out.  When I saw my baby in the first ultrasound, I cried tears of joy.

Anyway, I've always been fit all of my life (I ran track all of life, up until a year ago, but I still worked out) and it scares me - the thought of gaining 20+ pounds scares me.  I'm scared of getting stretch marks, but I'm sure that's just natural.

But MAN, will it be surreal when I actually have to buy maternity clothes...I don't know, I think your concern is normal.

  • I wish I didn't show until 22 weeks!  I started showing at 12 and I'm a tiny girl too... 5 ft, 120 lbs...  People at work just started to notice though.

Word of advice... summer dresses.  That's the one thing that's saving me right now... they're all pre-pregnancy, but because of the style and cut they all work right now... plus it's summer time so it'll help keep you cool!

Also, to save some money, look at consignment shops... they have super cute stuff for not a lot of money... my issue was spending money... I just didn't and don't wanna pay a lot for winter clothes... I'm due in Jan. so I'm gonna wear these clothes for all of 3 or 4 months.

You'll get there girl :-)  No worries!  Best of luck!

  • If you have a sun dress or something similar like that they can be really comfy over a bump as long as their a little looser in the front. I wore those a day or two before I picked up some maternity clothes.

  • Too many snarky comments. Every pregnancy is different, and every woman will start showing at a different time. I think it's the reality that it is starting to happen. Body image is a sensitive subject and while yes we're all pregnant, we're all entitled to our own feelings about it.

and seriously, grow up.  you are pregnant.  there are worse things in the world then the 1 pair of shorts you had planned to wear no longer fitting.

    Well, I tried.

  • OP- I'm sorry that you don't have anything to wear right now, but honestly you should have prepared a little more. Body issues are one thing (we all have them and it stinks to get larger), but getting pregnant means that getting bigger is part of the deal. When you agree to get pregnant (or don't effectively prevent) then its just something you have to live with.

Suck it up buttercup. You are going to get bigger so go buy yourself some larger clothes.

Oh, I didn't start showing until 24 weeks btw. However, by that time I had bought some maternity pants/tops. I just figured I'd have them on hand when the time comes. Think ahead and you will save yourself a lot of worry!

  • I have a really hard time feeling for you on this one. I mean seriously, you are 22 weeks pregnant! You haven't purchased anything maternity yet? I had to hold myself back from hitting the stores.

I too have always been very thin. I bought clothes that fit me and fit me well. My meaning is that as soon as my belly started to swell my pants no longer fit. Instead of whining about it I was ecstatic about buying a be-band and buying maternity clothes. I felt like I finally looked pregnant! And guess what - no one could tell! lol. A month later now people can finally start to tell and I couldn't be happier.

Enjoy the bloat, enjoy the belly. It can be so easy to fall prey to self-esteem issues (my weight hasn't been one, but the acne? Another story).

I completely agree- I have body image issues as well- just because I'm pregnant, it doesn't mean that I'm not going to struggle with feeling gross because my hips and butt are much bigger than they were two months ago.  Reaching for a larger size is disheartening, as is seeing the number on the scale going up.  I feel like any time I say something like, "I feel so huge" people roll their eyes and say, "but you're pregnant!"... obviously this is true, and I know my weight gain is for a really good reason- but that doesn't erase 29 years of worrying about how my now- pregnant butt looks in clothes.

  • Wow. I couldn't agree more with pp's. And really... a sad face in the subject line?!?! My husband, mother & MIL bought me maternity clothes by week 13. Friends have offered their maternity clothes. Women post on here all the time about great stores to find maternity clothes and after 6 months you were completely unprepared?? Had a Be Band, but don't know where it is?? This is really going to sound snarky, but I hope you get yourself together in the next 8-10 weeks. Having a baby is not a day-to-day adventure. There is much planning, organization and preparation involved.

thank you for saying this. because i've never been anorexic or anything but i've been insecure about my weight and it is hard even though i know its for the better and it doesnt last long. as much as i love being pregnant just because of feeling the baby and what not, id like if we could skip the weight gain!

  • I do own more than one pair of shorts. and eventually i found a pair that fit. and I am only 20 so to all the people that are like go out and buy some clothes. I was trying to make it thru summer because i knew i was gonna need maternity jeans and what not. and the reason i'm not necessarily prepared is because this is the first time ive been pregnant, I dont know how big i'm gonna get. Plus all my shirts still fit and my jeans, usually it's not 100 degrees literally in michigan so i dont need to wear shorts all the time. Some people are so rude on here. I was just venting.

  • Sweetheart - you just keep making it worse for yourself. I figured you were very young, but it is still really insane to think you were going to make it through the summer without needing any maternity and/or larger clothes. None of us know how big we're going to get so you buy things here and there that are a size larger, on clearance, etc. It's my first pregnancy too, I knew I was going to gain weight and I knew I had to be prepared. It's just a little strange for most of us to hear that someone more than halfway through their pregnancy just realized they were going to gain weight and need bigger clothes. Sometimes that comes across as being rude, but we're shocked that you're shocked to be putting on weight. Skinny girl or not.

The best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
