Preemies

Nap/Schedule ???

I know each baby is different but I am curious as to how many naps per day and for how long. I am trying to prepare myself for both babies being home (HOPEFULLY THIS WEEKEND, EEEK!) and want to really get a routine down for all of our sanity.

I know that whatever the case we will need to be flexable...

Also what do you reccomend as far as doctor's/OT/PT appts? I know that preemies are more likely to be overstimmed, but do you try to schedule certain days out and make the most of it...And twin momma's do you take both babies out for appts or do you sperate their appts?

I hope all that makes sense...TIA for your help!

Re: Nap/Schedule ???

  • Yay!  So exciting! Naps are a bit of a fluid thing here but we have fallen into the routine of eat, play, (sometimes snack), nap.   It is not precise and it makes scheduling kind of hard (I always know *about* what they will be doing but I'm never sure).  In the car is always naptime as they sleep though it so I use travel times to my advantage.

For Drs appointments I don't do more then one a day.  I find that they get overstimulated if there are more and we don't get good appointments that way.  (A cranky baby at PT doesn't work well). However I will do the same type of appointment together (pedi one after the other, PT at the same time, etc) but only one appt per baby, if that makes sense.  If only one baby has an appointment I try to leave the other at home.  It sounds rough to get a sitter after how long you have been without them but it really helps you concentrate on the one baby's needs and allows you to be 100% involved (I have found this to be so helpful at PT, they have different needs so Liam is seen more frequently.)  For the Pedi I bring someone with me so I have help to hold the baby who is not being examined and so there is an extra pair of hands in case they get hungry/cranky etc.

Good luck and I am so happy to hear that you will all be home so soon!

  • I can't speak for twins, but I found for my preemie that more than one doc/therapy appointment per day was too much. PITA to have a billion appointments, but you  might get happier babies at the end.

And congrats on getting closer to having them both at home!

All of the above!  Yay for getting everyone home!!!  I know I felt like I got more rest when I was done running back and forth to the hospital, hope it will be the same for you!
