1st tri running/working out

I am about 6 weeks, Ok so I read a few other posts, but I wanted to know has anyone else been slightly scared to actually work out after they found out they were PG?

I am a runner, though Ill admit the past 1 its been off and on (Ill go a month going great, something goes on and Ill stop for a week or two then start back up).  Though I can easily run up to 5 miles no problem any given time.  Around the time of Conception (I think) I didn't have time to run or work out, we were moving.  I finally got a 3 mile run in last Sunday, since it was my 1st time out since the move I did a 5 min run 1 min walk it felt great, the next day I got my BFP!  I tried to run once since then but felt weird (and really out of breath fast!) Sun and Mon this week I have gone on the elliptical and that felt just fine, today I walked.  I really do want to try and run during my pregnancy, but I am scared of all the jiggling and what not!

I'm definitely with you on the "slightly scared" wagon with working out...
I *know* I'm being ridiculous since the evening before I got my BFP I was doing deadlifts, power cleans and sprints (the sprints had me way more winded than normal, which makes sense in retrospect).  Since I had been doing those mere hours before I found out I was pregnant, I clearly should be fine working out.  But, yep, still nervous about it.

Sunday I just went for a very long walk, and today I did the elliptical and some swimming.  I'm planning on going back to CrossFit tomorrow, but I'm still anxious about it!

  • I wasn't scared at all.  I'm almost 100% certain you can't "knock" the baby loose so I'm not sure what there is to be scared about.

  • I am a marathon runner so I am used to running distances. I ran every day for about 8 miles, more in the weekends, with both kids. With DD1 I did a 6 mile run the evening before I went into labor at exactly 40 weeks. I also did a full marathon at 25 weeks. With this baby, I am still running daily with no issues. I had an extremely easy labor and delivery and very fast recovery (ran a full marathon 2 months post partum). Good luck!

  • I was nervous about working out in the beginning of all of my pregnancies. Logically I knew I shouldn't be, but it is still nerve wracking. I felt a little better after my first ultrasound at 8w, but by then I was dealing with morning sickness too. For me, it was worth pushing through the anxiety and the morning sickness (when I could, some days I was just too dehydrated). Running makes me feel somewhat normal and takes a bit of the pregnancy edge off.

  • I have a history of subchorionic hematoma and am also very tentative about running too much.  I scaled way back when I got my BFP, I was doing 6-8 miles a day running, some hills, fast paced, adding some sprinting, etc. 7 days a week.  Now I jog/walk in intervals about 3-4 miles about 5 days a week..  I have been pretty tired and dealing with nausea so it seems like enough for me!

  • The most important thing to remember is "You didn't train like a knucklehead before you got pregnant, don't train like one now that you are pregnant"...  Listen to your body.  Take the time to read ACOG's statement about training and working out while pregnant along with signs to watch for.  If you listen to your body you'll be just fine!  Of course, if there's a reason you shouldn't train pay attention to that as well, but most women find it relaxing to maintain that "me time" and there's a lot out there about healing up faster after the LO arrives because your body is so used to repairing itself.

  • This is a great thread to read. I am an avid runner as well, and I haven't really changed my running habits but sometimes I'm a little nervous. Not so much about causing the baby to "knock" around or anything like that but more regarding staying hydrated and not getting over heated. I have a waistband water bottle holder around here somewhere but I can't find it anywhere!

I ran 5 miles Wed night and plan to run 3-5 tonight! I'm trying not to loose the motivation! Good luck with your running! Smile

You guys are so motivating. I consider myself to be a very active person; however, I have just been so tired and it takes all I can to do simple household chores. I still work out everday, but I usually stick to lower impact aerobics. I'm hoping I'll start feeling better soon and can get back to doing some of the things I enjoy.
