over 25 pound baby = only back carry?

I have an ergo and my husband will use the baby bjorn comfort carrier, we both use it on our front, but our lo is 25 pounds and getting pretty heavy.  I want a new carrier, but should I only be doing back carries now?  I really want to still front carry as back carries intimidate me!  I also want something more egronomically sound that my husband can wear, he is a big and tall man and I want his carrier to be very sturdy and avle to be used by someone large!

  • I don't think weight has any bearing on whether you wear LO in the front or the back.  I feel like most people use back carries more as their children get older because of the better view (kids can look over shoulders or around their wearer more easily), but still use front carries for cuddles.

We use a diy wrap for back carries, but it sounds like you want something more structured.  Hopefully someone can chime in with a suggestion.  Maybe you can find a local store or baby-wearing group where you can try out various carriers to see what's the most comfortable for both of you?  When you try back carries, have a spotter the first few times, or sit on the edge of a sofa or bed.  It gets easier with practice!

  • I still carry a 28lb baby on front. It is slightly more comfortable for him to be on my back, but front is not bad. I use an ergo. I find it very secure to get him on my back using the "hip loading" method as ergo calls it. It just takes a bit of practice, which I did while standing next to the bed.

  • I still carry my 26lb DS on my front.  I'm more comfortable with front carries.  I couldn't get comfortable in an SSC so I got a TMD HB.  I can barely feel his weight wearing it, it is wonderful!

  • It depends on your child and your own weight. I'm rather petite, so for me, my only option was to carry DD on my back after a given point or else I felt like I was about to fall over. Also, she seemed to like the view from my back better.

  • For me, there did reach a point where DS was too big for a comfortable front carry, but I have lower back and hip pain from a combo of a bad mattress and too much time spent sleeping on my side only (pregnancy + bed-sharing).  After he was about 22 lbs., wearing him in front was painful.  I can wear him on my back for hours in his Boba, though.

I'm not petite, either!  I'm 6 feet tall and a size 20, so I'm sturdy.
