VBAC

Wdyt?

So I posted a couple of weeks ago my pro vbac ob quit. I am currently 31 weeks so I don't have a lot of time to find a new one. I had a consultation today with a dr I really like. He's willing to let me go to 42 weeks, will consider induction, does 2-3 successful vbacs a month in a very small practice, wont make me stay in bed for continuous monitoring, and he seems to think I could be successful. Plus he gave me his personal cell number because he attends all his vbac births himself. The only problem is that the hospital is 45 minutes away in good traffic. Do you think that's too far? Would you be concerned? What is a reasonable travel distance?

Re: Wdyt?

  • I think that's really reasonable.  My hospital for my first was about that far away.  It was not bad.  I mean, the car ride while in labor was pretty miserable.  But I had hospitals closer to me in an emergency, so it wasn't a big deal to have to drive across town(s) to get to the hospital that I was planning to deliver at.

That OB sounds awesome, too.  It would be totally worth it.

  • I would be a little concerned about traffic in my own case.  each week with dd, the doctor would change the amount of time between contractions when I had to call him, and I need to be at the hospital asap if my water broke. He said this knowing I am maybe 20 minutes from the hospital, and work right beside it.

I also was almost 6 cm dilated, 100% effaced, and not in labor when I was induced to have dd.

If with your last pregnancy, you didn't dilate quickly, I would say it is worth the chance, by what you say, the doc you found seems awesome.

    Agreed.

Did you dilate before you had your c/s?  I got to a 10 before mine and my VBAC labor went really fast.

  • I wouldn't think it would be unreasonable at all. I have heard of women driving hours to a vbac friendly dr. And, he sounds really good!!
  • I think the distance will be okay.  If you were super concerned, you could head that direction in early labor and walk a mall/camp at a hotel so that when things got active you were closer to the end destination (I don't think it'd be required but might help put your mind at ease if you're concerned).

From reading other stories on here, I think the most important variable following a determined mom is a supportive OB or midwife.  This doctor sounds great, so I think you should stick with him.

Cheers to having found another supportive provider!

  • I live in the mountains, and the hospital I had DS at was 35-45 minutes away.  Now I had a lay midwife, and she's about 45 minutes away.  If you found a good doctor that is supportive of everything you want/feel, I say do it!  I second driving in early labor and finding a park, mall, friend's neighborhood, etc to walk around at if you're nervous about the drive.  Good luck!

  • I would travel that far for a truly supportive doctor. Would you be comfortable laboring at a nearby hotel for a bit, if you don't want to be in the hospital in early labor?
