Taking baby outside in the heat?

My favorite type of exercise is getting outdoors for a walk or jog, and I love taking DS with me, however in the past few months I have refrained from doing so due to the heat and humidity, worrying how it will affect him.  I'm curious if I'm being overly protective or are other moms also keeping their babies indoors during the summer?  I will say I've gone out with him on the weekends when we are up early enough that it's not blazing out there yet....  He is a 9-month-old and very healthy, if that means anything!  I also bought one of those little stroller fans, haven't tried it out yet...  TIA!

Re: Taking baby outside in the heat?

  • My 4.5 month old is out everyday.  Several of my clients have babies too.  We dress them in light clothes and have fans.  I also keep the shade down all the way.  When he gets a little older I will give him water.

  • Just make sure they are well hydrated before you go out and well covered from the sun (but be careful not to make it a sauna in the stroller with a blanket over it).  Make sure he is dressed in light colored and breathable fabric.  Go out for shorter stints but more times a day.  If you are worried about heat, you can take an ice pack with you and a washcloth - and just keep cooling the washcloth off to put around his face.  I would just use your best judgement, keep a watch on him, and you should be fine!
  • You could also get an empty spray bottle and fill it with water to use as a mister occasionally.
  • we are out every morning walking the dog, usually between 7 and 8.  we have cut out late afternoon walks with the dog, but it's just too dang hot!  we're always out during the day though, running errands, playing with friends, etc. such is life in houston during the summer i think...  oh, we have a stroller fan and i think it helps, but only a little.  when it's hot, it's hot. oh, and i always have a sippy cup of water with us.

  • dress him lightly, use the fan and get out of the house. don't forget--- babies have survived in this climate for thousands of years before air conditioning. he'll be fine :)

  • Thanks everyone!  I feel reassured to hear others are taking their kids out and there are relatively simple ways to handle the heat.  We went out yesterday morning and used the fan, and I think he had more fun playing with the fan than actually getting cooled off by it, but oh well!
