Mucus in stools- when does it resolve?

DS has had dark orange (think pumpkin), liquid, very mucus-y stools since about 5 weeks (or at least that's when I started to notice the mucus)- about 4 a day. They don't smell awful, can't smell them strongly through the diaper, but do have a sour smell. Never any blood. No significant skin issues. But he has also not slept well, been quite fussy when not nursing, and been a frequent EBFer (every 1-2hrs during the day and 2-2.5hrs at night or more often when very fussy). Due to the mucus I was thinking dairy problem.

I've eliminated dairy for the past 2.5wks. We have had several days when he's slept a lot more, been less fussy, and spread out feedings but a day or two later he'll seem to go back to usual. I have not noticed any difference in his stools.

I ate some dairy yesterday/today and feel like he's been extra fussy today (but maybe just my imagination).

If your LO has milk protein allergy/intolerance, how long before the symptoms got better and completely resolved? This is so frustrating not to have a clear answer.

Re: Mucus in stools- when does it resolve?

  • sorry to hear that.  IMO It sounds like it may be dairy.  I saw a difference (mine was an allergy though) after 2 weeks.. but i hear it can be anywhere up to 4 weeks.

i would stay away from dairy for a while longer and if its still an issue perhaps eliminate soy also.   (over 50% of kids allergic or intolerant to cows milk are also allergic/intolerant to soy).

  • We had an improvement with blood in stool after about 3-4 weeks with no dairy, but still had tons of mucus.  We cut soy, and the blood stopped after about 2 weeks, but we still had mucus (not as much, but still every day).  When we cut eggs, the mucus stopped after about a week, and we haven't seen any since.
