So, I just started doing BLW with R and he loves it. But he has started getting chunks off the food, such as melon or chicken, and it gets to the back of his throat and he turns red and starts coughing. Is this the gagging they are talking about? Or is he actually starting to choke? He can usually get the food back to the front of his mouth, but instead of eating it, he spits it out. Is that normal, too?
And how do I feed him mushed up foods such as refried beans (which he LOVES)? Just put them on his highchair and let him go at it?
Also, a few of you mentioned giving them leafy greens and lentils for iron, how do you serve the leafys? Do you just steam spinach and leave the lettuces for later? Or do you give them bits of raw lettuce, too? And how do you do the lentils?
Sorry so many questions... I don't really have anyone around me (that I know of) who has done BLW so I don't have a resource nearby. And I am fighting the battle with the IL's who swear R isn't getting enough food because the few times we have fed him purees (like when family members watched him) he vacuumed them down.
Thanks for any help you can offer!
Re: He turns red
If he's making noise, he's not choking but gagging. (Choking is generally quite silent.) If it's taking a long time for him to clear, you might back off a bit, but if he's getting it out from the back of his throat, then he's learning what he's supposed to.
I still fed DD with a spoon for things like refried beans and lentil soup. And lentil soup is one of the places I would put spinach. But she also just likes beans straight up to eat (when she got older - probably around 11 or 12mo).
Thanks! That's what I thought, its just a bit worrisome when you see your baby turning bright red and coughing a bunch.
And thanks for the advice for the beans and lentils!
Hi scrh, nice to "see" you outside of our month board!
We're BLWing as well and I do spoon feed him certain things like oatmeal because he loooves it and gets seriously frustrated when he can't get it in his mouth so I give him his own spoon loaded and let him try to get it in his mouth and between that I give him bites. As far as beans and such, I put a little on his tray and give him a spoon because he likes to try to dip it but usually ends up using his hands. We give him raw greens as well as cooked greens and he likes them both equally.
I had tried giving him mum-mums but they gave him serious constipation issues so we tried giving him roasted seaweed 'chips' from trader joes which are kind of similar in that they dissolve like the mum-mums and the kid loooooves them! Just thought I'd pass on one of our favorites.
I'll have to give those seaweed chips a try! We live right down the road from a trader joes.
Mind if I send you a PM every once in a while since we are both going through the same things at the same-ish time?
