Side effects of Zantac?

Avery has been taking Zantac for reflux for a few weeks now. She didn't really spit up much, she has more of a silent reflux, but still is in pain. I've noticed that since she's been on the medicine she spits up once a day, at least, and it's the entire contents of her stomach. She will spit up for a few minutes, and it's pretty projectile. I am so worried about her! It really scares me when she does it, it just seems like too much for a baby to spit up.

She's not gaining weight all that quickly, but isn't losing weight either.

Do you ladies think that the Zantac could be causing the large episode of spit up? I tried not giving it to her yesterday, and she did not throw up at all. Today? The feeding after her medicine tonight she spit up.

I'm going to call the pedi in the morning and see if they can switch her meds. What are the other options for her?

Re: Side effects of Zantac?

  • What dosage is she on? Jericho would throw up everything on me before I got him on the Zantac, I noticed he started doing it again so I upped the dosage from .5 to .7cc's every 12hrs when he was 9lbs. He seems to be handling it ok now and he's 10 pounds.

Some babies can become immune to Zantac so you may need to talk to your doctor about Prilosec or another medicine, they just maybe more expensive.

I don't know how you feel about adding rice to bottles, but here is my rule.

When I feed him twice in a row and he seems to throw up all or 50% of what I fed him twice in a row, I give him a bottle of 3tsps rice to 3oz milk and burp him every 1.5 oz. He is gaining weight great now.

ETA : BTW I know its scary, I usually burst into tears when he spits up everything all over me. I feel so helpless. Its a horrible feeling to have to get "used" to your baby projectile vomiting everything you fed him all over you and themselves.

  • We have been on it for a week. Ava did not spit up until she was on it, she had silent reflux. I asked pedi about it and he said he did not think the spit up was from the zNtac.

  • My DS has been on it for over a month now and I've noticed that his spitting up INCREASES when his medication level needs to be adjusted due to weight gain...he basically grows out of his dosage...

When was your prescription written? Zantac has to be weight adjusted pretty frequently (most reflux meds do)

Zantac didn't really work for DD. It seemed to work for about 2 weeks but then she was right back to miserable and we were already at a high dosage. Now she is on Bethanechol (which empties the stomach faster so there is less to spit up) and Previcid. The previcid works differently than Zantac--Previcid  actually inhibits the acid production in the stomach while Zantac only neutralizes the acid. This combination seems to be working well for us so far.

    Good luck!
