work stuff-NBR-update

So I did it!  I am able to get unemployment, so I let my boss know today.  I won't know if HR approves it until late  next week.  If I am approved my last day is Aug. 5th!

When I got back to work on Tuesday there was a letter from our CEO that stated that our company is laying off 350 employees.  Mostly employees that are full time with benefits.  Today my supervisor called a meeting and it turns out MRI is on the chopping block for sure.  It makes sense to me in a way, for instance not one patient on our schedule today, only one yesterday, and that is definately not the first time.  They are calling for voluntary layoff's first with a severance package.  There is part of me that is seriously considering it because I hate my job anyway, although I don't know how practical that really is.  That being said I think I would be one of the first one's to go because I am low man on the pole.  Lots of discussions to be had with DH and God.

If you volunteer to go, will you still get unemployment?  I might wait if that were a factor - otherwise I completely understand wanting out!!

  • Sounds like it could be a win win for you. I obviously don't know all the details but if you'll still get unemployment (which I would think you would) I would volunteer to go. Hope it all works out for you!

The only thing standing in my way is the unemployment issue.  I have a friend who works for the Unemployment office so I put a call into her.  I would get 11 weeks severance and insurance until Dec. 31st.  My DH is on board, so if I can draw unemployment I am so out of there.  Maybe this can be my chance to go back to school!

  • You should definitley be able to get UE and you should be able to get it regardless of your severance*.  When I had "salary continuance" as part of a severance package, I was eligible right away becasue I was unemployed (they only ask if you're working, not what income you have coming in) and the rep I talked with said it's somethign a lot of campanies do to get out of claims being filed.

I got UE, severance, health coverage, full vesting in all retirement accounts, and a new job in 2 months. I came out so far ahead in that senario.

*I might be worng but that was my experience.  My layoff was not voluntary, but it was definitely welcome.

  • You must work for the same company as my friend, she just found out the same news. I agree with pp though. Good luck!

  • Sounds like it could be a great opportunity.. good luck with whatever the future brings you!!
  • I would have killed for this opportunity.  My company laid off 30% of its workforce during the recesssion, based on "performance" ... a misnomer, since we are on a forced curve for ratings, and the ones they let go were some quality performers.  They never gave the option for voluntary layoffs, and I was already mentally checked out.  So I held onto a job I didn't want while people who desperately wanted to stay were shuffled off into no man's land.  The result was when we came out of the recession (we're doing marvelously now), a lot of the people they kept left anyways, and we struggle to find good people.  I think your company has a much better policy.

Good luck in making your decision... I know it is a tough one!

I am in a Union so I think that makes a difference about how they have to handle things...
