Neural Tube Defects results

Hey, I got a call from my doctor today saying that my blood work showed that I am at a higher risk of my baby having a neural tube defect such as spinal bifida. We have an ultrasound Monday that will tell us if there is anything wrong or not.

I was wondering if any of you got these results and then learned that everything was fine. I think it's going to be a very long weekend filled with a lot of praying...

Thanks in advance.

  • Was this done during a blood test? If so, I JUST read today (I believe on the bump) that a lot of women are told they have a high risk of whatever they are screening for in a quad screen but 90% of them never have babies born with any sort of defect. If I can find that link I will send it to you because I think it will ease your mind.

  • Thanks so much for the prayers ladies.

Yea, it was just the blood work. Hearing that there is a 90% chance that everything is ok makes me feel better. Thanks!

  • I'm still trying to find that link! I just get so many baby emails sent to my phone everyday I don't remember which website it came from.

  •  I Couldn't get the link to work so I just copied and pasted the section where it talks about the blood tests. Hope this helps put your mind to ease until you truly know for sure!  This very common procedure checks your blood (not your baby's) for specific protein and hormone levels and any potential genetic issues. Before you start breathing in that strained fearful way or furrowing your brow in concern, you should know that even if you do get a positive test this hardly means your little trooper is in trouble. In reality, only about 3 to 5 percent of women yield positive results, and of those women, only 10 percent actually have any sort of complication to report. In other words, 90% of the women who get positive results from the MMT are getting false positives.Big Picture: The MMT helps 10% of women start to deal with the scary reality that something isn't normal about their pregnancy, while causing a crap-ton of undue stress for 90% of the women.Obviously, a positive test from the MMT will have the doctor recommending further testing, including the much-scarier very-invasive amniocentesis (sticking a massive needle into your womb) and more ultrasounds.Remember: this is your pregnancy. You make the choices here. If you don't want to go through the undue stress of taking this test, you can opt out. That's your right.Still, you should weigh the risks carefully. The blood test doesidentify neural tube defects and Down Syndrome when it's not being wrong (which it almost always is).For women over the age of 35, doctors will highly recommend this test, as Down Syndrome is more common in babies born to women over the age of 35, and 10% more common in women over the age of 40.To sum it up: the MMT is a simple blood test that has 90% false positives, which causes serious-but-undue stress in millions of young women, while it also informs a minority of women about the status of unexpected and serious issues.Your pregnancy, your choice.

  • Thank you so much! That was comforting to read!
  • I am in the same boat.  I found out on Tuesday that our risk is 1/120.  It's not "high" but it's higher than usual.  I have an ultrasound on Wednesday.  The doctor told me that most of the time it's due to a false positive on the test and that they're fairly common.  Of course, it's still hard not to worry at all.  My T&Ps will be with you and please update us on Monday.

  • Hi, I just got the exact same call last week! My AFP levels were high, which could be an indicator of an NT defect such as Spina Bifida (among other things).  Needless to say I was totally freaked out and started doing lots of research online.  The predominant thing I found is that this test does result in many false positives.  The statistic is something like 50 out of 1000 women have the results come back 'high', and of those 50 women only 1 has a baby that actually has an NT defect.

Anyhow I had to wait until yesterday morning for my level II u/s (7 grueling days of worry!) and the u/s showed a completely normal healthy baby GIRL with a perfect spinal cord, head, abdomen, everything!  So the doctor said that this was just a case of a false positive.  She did say that we could get an amnio to confirm that all is well, but those have a risk of miscarriage so I opted against it.

To me, pregnancy is a real leap of faith, no one really knows what health problems the baby will have until it is born- I just have faith that all will be well!

You are in my thoughts, I'm guessing everything is normal :-)
