Whose baby is on a schedule?

So my mom keeps annoying me that LO has to sleep through the night and that she finally needs a schedule when it comes to eating. Since LO is only about nine pounds with seven weeks I just dont believe in it and I think I should feed her when she is hungry.

How is it with your LOs ladies? Just curious...

Re: Whose baby is on a schedule?

  • The only "schedule" Emma is on is when I put her to bed (8pm), and we wake her up and feed her again at 11:30 at night, this is just to stop her from getting up at 1:30am and 5:30am, or something similar.

The best thing to do is to feed a baby when they are hungry.  Schedules are linked with failure to thrive and are more about your convenience than babies health.  Keep just feeding her when she needs it, especially when she is this tiny

  • When M wakes for the day around 10 I give her a bath and dress her then feed her and she naps then I change her and feed her when she gets up I do that until about 9 when I change her into her sleeper and swaddle her and she sleeps thru till about 5.

Well, it is an awesome name.

And unfortunately, super popular :( I loved it before I even knew that though, oh well.

  • No schedule here!

Don't worry about what other people are telling you. If you are happy, that's all that matters!

  • I feed on demand but DD has settled into her own "schedule", so to speak.  She wakes up for the day between 7-9am.  I change her diaper and get her dressed for the day while warming up her bottle.  I feed on demand and put her down to sleep when she feels like it all day.  Last night was the first time I tried the bath/book/bottle routine before bed, which I'll keep doing.  She sleeps one stretch around 8pm, then another 3-4 hour stretch starting around midnight.  She usually goes back to sleep after that early morning feeding but only if she sleeps with me.

I am not worrying about a schedule, but am starting to get a routine that works around what she's doing on her own.  I think it's just one of those topics that people just can't help making comments and suggestions about.

  • It's so old school to think you need to schedule a baby. DH's grandma keeps asking us the same thing. I got away with "oh, he's so tiny" for the first month or so. I think I'll move to "oh, he's doing fine" now.

Really, it's much less stress to just meet his needs as they come up. He is getting more predictable of his own accord. And I don't really believe much of what we do or don't do has anything to do with which babies sleep through the night. Eventually, sure, but not until at least 6 months old. I don't delude myself that I have that much impact right now.

  • we let her come up with her own schedule, but its changed a little now that i went back to work.

when you BF and work, a schedule is important.

If you want to keep breastfeeding, feeding on demand and never ever skipping a pumping session is important.

We have a bedtime routine and that's about it. It looks like this:

    8:00ish- bath then feed

    9:00ish- bed

He sleeps, we wake up, feed him, go back to bed and repeat until I don't feel tired or he won't go back to bed- whatever comes first.

During the day I feed whenever he wants- it's usually about every 2 hours but sometimes it's every hour. Occasionally he'll go 2.5-3 hours without feeding during the day- usually it's if we're outside and he's warm and sleeping.

I try not to let him sleep more than 2 hours straight during the day because I want him to sleep more at night. He normally sleeps about 7 hours now from 9-4.

  • We don't have a set schedule. I feed completely on demand around the clock. He goes 2-3hrs during the day, and gives me a nice stretch of 4-6hrs at night.

The only 'routine' part of our day is that I have an idea of what time his usual naps are (around 11am ish, 1or2pm ish, etc). But if he's having an off day, or growing then everything is up in the air and I just go along with it.

We do try to go to bed at the same time every night, but again, that can change depending on what he wants.

  • DS pretty much put himself on a schedule. He wakes about the same time every day, typically 630am, back to sleep then up again at 930 to eat. We eat and play, then by 1130 he is ready to nap. Back up at 1230 to eat again. Between 1230 and 330, he typically plays and cat naps. Eats at 330. Plays and cat naps 4 till 630 when he eats again. From 7 to 830 he plays then naps from 830 to 930. Eats then. After that, he'll get a bath, play a few minutes and start to wind down and to to bed at 1030. He sleeps till 630 and we start the day over. It works well for us.

  • Both of my babies have been in a routine from very early on. I return to work in 2 weeks and yes, I can say that my baby eats and naps at mostly the same time each day. It's quite nice to have her days be so predictable. (And yes, she's STTN!!) While some might say a schedule isn't necessary, I find it is absolutely the opposite. That's just what fits my style, though.  Do what works for you.

  • We are on a feeding schedule..we feed every 4 hours, sometimes 3.5 if he wants it.  Naps are sporatic throughout the day. Bedtime routine starts around 10:00, he has a 10:30 feeding and then bed around 11.

  • We don't have a schedule but our days are pretty similar in terms of feeding, napping, bedtime, etc. Everything is on demand. We give her a bath between 7:30-8:30 every night, then she nurses and is in her crib by 9. For what it's worth she has been STTN.

I think you should continue to feed your LO when they are hungry. What is the point in having a crabby LO when you could just feed them/meet their needs and have a content LO instead?!

  • i have recently helped mine onto a routine.  we are doing Eat/Awake/Sleep.  she eats and is awake for 30-45min after before she starts yawning.  i put her down for a nap and she'll sleep 2 hrs or so until she eats again.  i usually have to wake her to eat or it would be every 4 hrs.  and i want her to eat every 3.  and repeat.  she's been sleeping through the night 9-5 or 10pm-6am...since 6 weeks old!
