Toddlers: 24 Months+

almost 2 1/2 and very clingy - phase or not?

N's turned very very clingy in the past month.  My mom watches him M-F while DH and I work.  For the past month when my mom leaves at night he starts calling "grandma, grandma" over and over again.  I have to distract him and even then he'll call for her.  Once my mom is gone beside calling for her, he's stuck by me all the time.  I love him to death, but it's just so hard to get anything done with him hanging off my leg.  Do they go through a clingy phase at about 2 1/2?  We also moved about a month ago...do you think he's acting like this because of the move?

  • I don't know, but mine is.  I'm actually a little bit worried about it, and I'm curious to hear what others say.  Mine is also not sleeping enough.  I'm hoping both of these are due to the arrival of his little brother.

  • My guess would be that they both went through some pretty big life changes and they are feeling insecure about their little worlds and therefore they are being clingy. That is just a guess though. My DD went through a clingy phase right about 2 1/2 as well but my mother passed away (unexpectedly) right about then. DD spent 2-3 days a week with my mom and I assumed the clinginess was due to the lose of her "Gamma" and not her age/a phase but it could have been a bit of both. DD just turned 3 yesterday and she is much lest clingy but still has her moments....for example I must leave the house if I want DH to put her to bed or give her a bath.

My DS has been very clingy and whiney (for me, not DH) and he's 2.5! I hope it passes soon.
  • I know my DD is a little younger than your LO but she seems to be going through a clingy phase.  For the past month or so she'll go through bouts of crying/throwing a tantrum when being separated from us for nursery school at church.  She always comes back out smiling like she had fun so she's obviously not being tortured in there. But the drama is a bit much!

    I am thinking phase.

  • DS has gotten very clingy at bedtime!  He wants to sit in my lap and snuggle, and is very "mama, mama, mama" when I'm trying to leave.  I think a part of it is delaying tactics, but there is a clinginess to it too.

  • I'm going to have to say it's definitely related to the move. We moved in May and then went on vacation when DD was 22 months old. She went through an AWFUL clingy/separation anxiety phase that lasted for a few weeks. I thought it would never end, but, of course, it did.

It's a phase. This, too, will pass.
