may be a stupid ? about shoes

Someone told me today that I needed to put shoes on M so that she doesn't get flat feet.  I personally thought it was crazy but then it made me wonder at what age do they need to start wearing shoes if any before they start crawling/walking.  I grew up only wearing flip flops or going barefoot and my feet are fine.

Re: may be a stupid ? about shoes

  • I was actually told the opposite. That you shouldn't put shoes on babies until they start to walk because it can cause issues with the way their feet form.

  • Babies don't need shoes until they start walking
  • You're not supposed to put shoes on them until they start walking.

But I totally do anyway. Not all the time, but once in a while. The tiny shoes are just too cute!

  • I'm going to go against what everyone has said about not until they start walking... but I'm just going to quote what I just read in a magazine that I was flipping through...(American Baby July 2011 edition)

"Q: My baby has flat feet. Is this normal?

A:Absolutely, says Paul Scherer, D.P.M., a professor of podiatry at Western University of Health Sciences, in Pomona, California. Almost all babies have flat feet, arches begin to take shape at about age 2. In fact, newborn feet are mostly cartilage and soft tissue. The critical bones don't fully form until age 5. To help your tot learn to walk, let him go barefoot as much as possible and choose starter shoes with flexible soles so he can really connect with the ground."

I plan on talking to the pedi about it before letting him walk around barefoot all the time, but it doesn't seem logical and I have a friend that her pedi told her the same thing, about barefoot and that wearing shoes will not help or not help the shape of her feet until 3-5 years.

  • Barefoot or soft sole shoes are best for babies and toddlers learning to walk. Robeez makes great shoes with soft soles, they are expensive, but are really super cute!

  • Babies should learn to walk in soft shoes or bare feet.  Putting them in hard soled shoes too early can actually be bad for their foot development.  Check out the stride rite website for some great info.

This company has done serious research into foot development.  Unfortunately they've recently been bought out by payless and their quality has dropped a bit, but that doesn't really have any bearing on all the past research they've done.

ETA: robeez are made by stride rite now
