Anyone else NOT stocking the freezer?

It just feels like a lot of work to stock the freezer with stuff, and it's so HOT right now... Call me lazy, but I don't see the problem with having chinese food, pizza, greek takeout, etc. for 2 or 3 weeks after the baby comes.  After that I'll be able to cook again, right?  How long do you plan on having your "freezer stock" last for?  I also am not really a fan of casseroles and I can't think of much that I'd put in the freezer and be excited to eat...

Am I crazy for not at least attempting to stock the freezer?

  • I'm not but quite honestly I never cook anyway. MH does, and I have a feeling my MIL who lives really close by will probably be making sure we eat.

  • Us! I cannot think of anything worse than eating a casserole during the summer. Funny too, because I was all about stocking the freezer when we got pregnant but now that the time is here it seems silly to cook in this heat items we probably wouldn't eat now.

Our plan is just to have meats in the freezer to take out and grill. Add a salad and veggies. My parents are going to be here for two weeks also so I'm not overly worried about cooking in the first few weeks..

  • I'll be relying on the kindness of our parents, and take-out! I was planning to stock the freezer too, but now...it just seems like too much work. I will definitely stock up on pantry-groceries before though.

I am not. Between getting something take out, my mom and his parents cooking and the ladies at church having a big "take dinner to the family" chart set up I do not think we will need to have things frozen. If we did they would stay in there a long time and probably end up being forgotten about. My church ladies are so great they will probably be bringing us meals for a while so I will just figure something out after that. My mom has already said she will cook for us as well so I think I will have enough help or we can always call PF Changs.....yummy!.....and get H to pick it up!

  • I can't cook to begin with so we will just have to continue living on easy things like pasta, grilled burgers and chicken, salads etc.  My sisters both cook like fiends so they will probably bring me over some stuff as well.

  • I'm not. there are lots of super easy meals we can make and DH is perfectly capable of cooking if I can't. I have no problem with sandwiches or similar if neither of us want to cook.
  • we are not. I can barely cook dinner for right now never mind cooking for a later date haha. Plus we just don't have enough room in our freezer right now. ALso DH's whole family (I"m talking siblings, parents, grandparents, aunt and uncles, etc) all live in the same town as us and they are Italian so I"m sure some of them will bring us food or help out if we need it. I might go to BJ's in a week or so ad stock up on some frozen meals and frozen boxes of burgers but thats about it.
  • Other then buying some frozen pizzas, frozen veggies, some organic bean burritos that I LOVE and making sure I have a good stock of pasta and sauce - all things H can manage to make on his own - I have no plan to stock the freezer.

I plan I buying an extra box or two of cold cereal and some yogurt, things like that. But between H, my mom who lives 20 minutes away (she doesn't cook much but will go to the store with a list for me) and the 15 take out places in a 5 mile radius of our house, I'm pretty sure I wont starve for the first couple weeks LO is home.

I hate leftovers with the fire of a thousand suns. No way I am making freezer meals that I know I wont want to eat.

  • We are not stocking our freezer at all.  I love to cook and am thinking cooking will be a nice way to break my day up and do something other than baby-related tasks.  Now I realize this may sound great now, but maybe not be something I am still so keen on when the baby actually gets here.  And if that is the case, I think we will survive just fine between grilling meats (which hubby does); cold meat sandwiches; meals from friends/family; and take out every now and then.  Having a stocked freezer is definitely low man on the totem pole as far as my worries and concerns for once the baby arrives

  • i'm with you - i'll either get take out or grill. Grilling is quick and we always have a freezer full of chicken, steak, etc.

LOL. In addition to being a great cook, MH makes enough food for an army and we never eat the leftovers bc he always wants something else. I constantly tell him he needs to cut back.

  • DH and I get the vast majority of our food from Country Pride Food Services and it is awesome. They come stock the huge freezer once every 6 months with meats, veggies, prepared foods, etc. They also bring grocery items like pasta, canned goods, condiments, even toilet paper and laundry detergent. I pay one bill a month and we are set. So to answer your question, no I won't be doing anything special to stock my freezer. If I am well enough to defrost a casserole and heat it up then I can grab something out of my freezer that is already there and cook something fresh. If I normal things like milk, eggs, bread or cheese I will take it as an opportunity to get out of the house with LO for a little while so I don't go completely stir crazy.

  • The only thing I'm making for the freezer are a couple batches of pizza dough, only because I know DH won't make it correctly.  We love grilled pizzas so if I have the dough ready, he can make the pizzas.  :)
  • I am lucky enough to have a retired nurse for a MIL who is very eager to take care of me and her first grandchild. She's Italian, too, and an amazing cook so I'm very much looking forward to that! She is coming out (my in laws live almost 2 hours way) for at least 2 weeks after the baby arrives to help cook/clean/shop/etc.

We aren't. My mom will be there to help with cooking for 3 weeks and my mil also said that she would bring us dinners the first week.

Even if we didn't have help I know we could manage throwing something quick and easy together. I don't get the freezer meal thing.

  • I think I'm middle of the road.. I don't plan on stocking my freezer with tons of casseroles. My freezer just isn't big enough to, but I have a few frozen things in there (lasagna, pizza, leftover chili, veggies & fruit, etc). I'm pretty sure my mom will bring us food at least once a week for the first 2-3 weeks, and will help me with my grocery shopping or cooking as needed. DH & I share the cooking, usually more me (I'm SAHW) but it's actually a stress-reliever for me most of the time, and I'm pretty sure as long as baby's clean, dry, and fed I'll be okay to put her in the swing or bouncer for awhile so I can cook.

  • I thought about doing it. I can't imagine eating a casserole in the summertime. I will make sure we have meat to grill, and some frozen veggies. My husband is capable of going to the store and picking up things for dinner. I am sure our families will bring a meal over.
  • We aren't and I didn't the first time - it was fine.  Like pp said, we will grill, I have tons of quick and easy things like raviolis, spaghetti, chicken nuggets, and so on already in the rotation and DH is more than capable of making something.  Plus family will be here off and on the first few weeks and they have no problem cooking for us, or grabbing take out.

I was reading a post a few weeks ago about stocking up on things like TP, PT, laundry detergent and preparing with tons of extras... it just seems like a lot of work to me.  I can go to the store if I need to or DH can leave my side for an hour to grab some stuff.  The only thing I made sure I have on hand and enough for a few days is pads.

  • No.

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
  • We have not stocked the freezer before any of our babies being born. Really no need to IMO - we make dinner, order in or go out. Done. We really don't change our dailly lives just because we our having a baby :)

  • We're getting lots of frozen pizzas and stuff for grilling in our freezer--I will have a few things made (but things I usually do anyway so not a big deal to make ahead of time).

I would do more if I had a bigger freezer

  • We will not be making Freezer meals.  I will however make sure we are still stocked with frozen steaks, chicken, etc.  Stock the pantry with rice, pasta etc.  I will also be making a spaghetti meat sauce which freezes really well.  We live 2 minutes from our nearest grocery store, have plenty of take out options, my mom lives 6 street down from us and I am not opposed to going out to eat with LO.  So I think we can manage.

  • I am not...not a big fan of reheated food in the first place.  I do have some crock pot meals pleaned so I dont have to spend time making stuff, but my mom is staying with me for a week.  I will get some easy to make stuff.  SO other can cook and like some people have said I am sure takeout will be my friend..lol

  • We aren't doing this. The grocery store is 2 miles away. My mom will be staying with us for at least the first week, as she did with DD#1, and she prepared most meals during that time. DH will probably have 3 weeks off from work, and he is usually the one who prepares meals anyways. We buy in bulk, so we have a whole deep freezer full of food as is. Last summer we bought 1/2 a cow, so we have plenty of hamburger, steaks, and roasts to last us for awhile.

  • Us! I'm planning on buying some more convenient foods (frozen pizzas, chicken fingers for the kids, etc), but not really stocking up per se. I *do* plan to stock up on pop and crackers/cookies, however, just to have on hand when people come over. I found that was very helpful since it's no work to put out a plate of cookies and some pretzels for visitors, but still makes me feel like I'm being hospitable.

Oh, and I do plan to stock up on easy snack items for the kids - juice boxes, crackers in individual packages, yogurt, etc. Easy stuff they can grab themselves for the first few weeks.

  • I'm not, I didn't when I had DD and was able to cook dinner, so I'm sure I can do it again this time!

  • Didn't do it with DS #1 and not planning on doing it now.

I would however like to get some new crock pot recipes in the mix

  • We're only making enough things for 1-2 weeks and no they are not all casseroles Smile We don't like processed foods so buying frozen meals and getting takeout is just not in the cards for us. We are fortunate though that both our mothers will be bringing us food/cooking for us and our church will do a 3 week meal delivery as well.

  • I'm not. We live in Manhattan and most restaurants around here deliver. It'll be pricey, but a nice break from cooking (which I hate)!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker image
  • I'm not, but my DH is the one who usually cooks. After DD was born we had people from church bringing us dinner twice a week and we also were getting takeout a lot. It wasn't a big deal.

  • My H is the better cook and doesn't really like frozen/reheated meals. He does about half the cooking now, so I doubt he'll mind doing all of it for a couple of weeks while he's off from work.

I'll stock the pantry, though - our grocery store isn't convenient.

  • People tend to think they will be completely laid up after their baby is born. You will still be able to cook when you get home from the hospital.  Also, the first night home after DS we had chinese, the second was pizza.  Other than that, I made breakfast and lunch. I also made dinner the third night home and was just fine.

If you stock anything, I would stock basics, like bread and stuff for sandwiches, easy breakfast foods, and easy snacks. The main purpose is to keep you from running to the store and to have stuff on hand, which is a pain anyway.

  • Nah. I'm not stocking my cooking/stocking my freezer. I don't know what the big fuss is about cooking meals and having them in the freezer. The meals would still have to be unthawed and heated up. Why not just eat something fresh that only takes a few minutes to make?

I'm cool with making a quick sandwich or having some takeout if I don't feel like actually cooking a meal and DH can watch the baby if I need to go to the store for something. Life goes on, even with a newborn.
