The Backstory:
When DS was 8 months old we tried formula for the first time. Well, within minutes he broke out in hives, swelled and vomitted violently. We rushed to the ER and spent the next several weeks at the pedi and allergist to determine that he was, in fact, allergic to dairy. The strange thing was that I hadn't eliminated dairy from my diet and he was fine with BM. Whatever....
Fast forward to 15 months old. He'd been completely, 100% dairy free and on soy formula. He was eating a snack one day and he grabbed my goldfish crackers. He ate two with NO reaction whatsoever. So the next day I gave him 3, the next day 4, and so on. He never reacted....no rash, no vomit, not even a messy diaper. We went back to the allergist and she gave him some yogurt in the office. He broke out a bit around his mouth but was ok. She was really encouraged and said we can start giving him tiny amounts of dairy and just watch him.
We've been following her advice ever since (that was last October). We've found that he gets eczema and icky poops from whole milk but seems to tolerate cheese, cream cheese and butter just fine. If he gets too much (like pizza at daycare) he'll sometimes break out around his mouth or have an eczema flare.
The Question
So, my question for all you experienced ladies is....would this be consistent with a lactose intolerance instead of a true dairy allergy that he's simply outgrowing? We have a follow up with his allergist in 2 weeks and we'll obviously discuss it but sometimes it's nice to hear from moms going through the same thing
I would love to get him off soy milk (he hates coconut and almond) and onto something lactose free if we could.
TIA!
Re: Naive question about dairy allergies
I am definitely not experienced in this since we're avoiding all dairy but I'll give my 2 cent.. i think it depends on the level of his allergy. It might be mild, that's why he can tolerate yogurt, cheese.. but not straight milk.
many kids can have BM even though the mom has dairy.
it's very possible he outgrew it. if not, there is oats milk, rice milk.. also many people just use juices or other means of calcium intake.
fingers crossed that he outgrew it!
Your son sounds very similar to my daughter. She eats goldfish crackers and other crackers, cookies, cakes, etc that have milk baked into them. We haven't trialed any straight dairy but are looking to do so in the next few months. She doesn't even get eczema flares anymore or yucky poops, so we're hoping she's outgrown it. Her recent blood test was positive for dairy allergy but the skin prick test was negative so we're looking forward to meeting with an allergist for some interpretation.
One word of caution: with babies/kids they are typically allergic to the protein in milk, not the lactose, so swtiching to a lactose-free milk probably would not work if your son is still intolerant/allergic. Lactose intolerance is more common in adults, kids typically have milk protein intolerance.
