Hi Ladies,
I'm sure you get posts like this all the time, but here goes. My DH and I are getting ready to make the big move from the east coast to the Seattle area (job transfer for him). We are in the process of selling our home here and then we will be looking in WA. We did previously live in WA for 2 years (Bothell area), but it was before we had kids. Now we have 2 sons (ages 3 and 7 months).
The move process is totally overwhelming to me this time with the kid factor. I'm a SAHM and we are pretty settled in here with lots of activities, preschool, lots of family and friends. We have a few friends out west, but we will basically be on our own. It feels like completely starting from scratch.
So, I would really appreciate any thoughts on preschools, area school systems, activities, etc. We are interested in moving back to the Bothell (Canyon Park) area, but may consider some other neighborhoods.
Also, any tips to make the transition easier for the kids is much appreciated. Everyone keeps saying "they'll adjust!" I know they will, but I can see that it may be tough for my 3yo. He's really attached to his friends and cousins here.
TIA!
Gwen
Re: Relocating from the East coast. Help!
The east side in general has good school districts and plenty of kid friendly activities... I don't think you can go wrong with the area you're looking at... you could look at Kirkland, Redmond, Bellevue, Issaquah, Sammamish...
I'd base your location on your DH's commute as well. What city will he be working in?
Bothell and Mill Creek both have great education systems, and great places to live. I know of a few preschools in that area as well since I have family that still lives there (I grew up in Bothell).
We just moved across the state, I also have an almost 3 year old and was worried about how he would handle it. He's done surprisingly well with it, aside from missing his friends, which surprised me. We got him really excited about the move by telling him he was going to a new room, with all of his toys, and his bed. We even had a picture of the place to show him what it looked like. We showed it to him, told him where his room was and he would go tell the rest of the family. When we finally moved in he was just so excited to see his new room he hasn't mentioned the old house AT all.
Good luck on your move, and I hope you find a wonderful area to call home!
I think once your settled getting out and into activities with the kids will help you all feel like your making a new home. The local libraries have kid/toddler story times, this time of year lots of festival/fairs are going on, farmers markets etc. If you end up in the areas mentioned MOSS (mothers of south snohomish) is a great moms group, I have lots of friends that were part of it. They match you into groups in your area, meet weekly and have planned large group activies.
Also Little Gym, Gymboree, swim lessons are great ways to get out of the house, especially as the weather turns to fall/winter.
Thanks for the responses! My husband will be working in Redmond. Previously he commuted to/from Bothell and it wasn't bad.
I appreciate all of the responses. The move process is crazy, but I'm hoping we can settle in and enjoy life in the PNW

Hello. Have you ever been to Country Village while you lived in Bothell? It is a great place for kids with kid friendly coffee shops, playground, little train rides, and ducks to feed. My neices live in the Canyon Park area and are the ages 4 and 1. Both their mom's are active in playgroups and the 4 year olds mom loves the preschool her daughter attends. It sounds wonderful, I use to teach preschool so have pretty high standards:) I know they would love to answer any questions or give recommendations you can check out. Let me know if you would like their emails.
Hope your move goes smoothly:)
PS. My best tip for finding activities in the PNW is Seattle's Child Magazine. You can see it online at seattleschild.com They have everything from local story times to outdoor children concerts to best beaches for kids.
