This is really more of an intolerance question and I know there's a HUGE difference between allergies and intolerances, but I don't know who else to ask.
DH and I are both lactose-intolerant. DD seemed to be as well when we first tried giving her cow's milk around 15 months. She would get diarreah every time she drank it, ditto with ice cream, but no reactions to hard cheeses or yogurt (things I can also eat).
Fast forward to this summer. Suddenly, it seems like her system can tolerate dairy. I'm pretty sure she'll never be a milk chugger, but my question is this (and forgive my extreme ignorance)- will the frequency with which she consumes cow's milk impact her intolerance one way or another? Meaning, should I make any effort to give her more or less cow's milk/dairy in general so she can keep enjoying the occasional pizza, ice cream, baked ziti, etc. (all things I like so much that I eat them myself occasionally anyway and suffer the stomach ache that inevitably follows) or will it not matter at all how much she is exposed to it?
Sorry if my question seems kind of out there. I just read a Jerome Groopman article in which he cites research that claims some allergies can be mitigated by continuously feeding the offending food in a different form (baked v. raw, for example) and I wondered if the same was true of an intolerance, or if an intolerance is simply outgrown.
