3rd Trimester

Strange question about water breaking.

Hi,

Last night I felt a little pop at the top of my uterus. I know it could have been a hard kick, but at childbirth class this week, the nurse was talking about how your water can break at the top of your uterus. I haven't been leaking fluid or anything so my question is can your water break and you not be dilated or anything? I know that is a weird question and if it can, where does the water leak to. Does it stay in your uterus... Is it even possible for it to break before you dilate?

TIA!! :)

  • If it breaks, it will leak, even if you're not dilated.  Think about menstration, you're not dilated at all during that but it still is able to exit through the cervix.

  • Yup, you will most definitely leak fluid if your water broke. I felt that 'pop' right before my water broke w/ DS...and out came the fluid. LOL

  • if it breaks, you'll have leaking..whether it's just a trickle or a gush. i doubt it was your water if you haven't had any kind of leaking at all

    Yup.

And to answer the rest of your question, I was 0 dilated or effaced at my 39 week appointment and had my water break (we're talking flood-like breakage here) 3 days later, so yes, it's possible for your water to break even if you haven't made any kind of progress.

But again, if your water breaks, you will leak fluid. It won't just collect in your uterus or something like that.

  • The "pop" you felt was prob just the baby since you're not leaking any fluid. I frequently feel little popping sensations but my water isn't broken. Sometimes you can hear it too. It's weird.
