My child escaping is my worst nightmare, especially since my son can open dead bolts and take off the door handle lock things. We actually had to install special security locks that are at the top of the door to keep him inside. and I think I check them at least twice before going to bed or taking a shower.
what i don't get is how could the mothers be in that deep of a sleep for a nap? I never ever nap with my bedroom door closed, the monitor is on, and even then I don't fall into a deep sleep. My kid is loud and wakes me up! I think is BS to charge them with that, BUT I do think it is irresponsible to have a toddler and not take the proper precautions. Yes, shiit happens and they are crafty little boogers, but you should know to have the right kind of baby locks on your house.

I guess whoever is prosecuting or charging these women has never had a child/children and can't understand the toll it takes on one physically and emotionally. Taking a nap is mandatory for most mothers, and while the house 'should' have been more secure, sometimes kids are little magicians and can do things we don't expect. Get over yourself legal system! Moms need a break too.

This happened to my mom. She was babysitting a 3 year old. Put her to bed. My Dad checked on the little girl at 6AM and when my mom got up at 7AM she was gone.
The police had picked her up a block away from our house wearing just a shirt and diaper(special needs child). After a lot of investigating they learned that the little girl knew how to open the deadbolts, something my mom and dad never suspected. My mom was not charged, but her parents were PISSED!!!
Sidenote: My mom was so worried about this little girls comfort that she took her PJ bottoms off before bed because the elastic waist was too tight. She was not neglecting her.

My question would be, why was the door not locked and childproofed?
Because you never know what a kid is capable of doing until they do it. Kids can get through locks easy, and I know many kids who doorknob covers don't even slow down. Unless there is a chain well above their height with arms stretched+ the height of the tallest chair in your house, you never know if they can get out.
You can childproof all you like but the little buggers are always finding new and exciting ways to make your heart race. I didn't know DS could climb up our bookcase until he brought me an empty beer bottle that was on the 3rd shelf. Now everything glass is moved to the top. Can't wait til he can get there.
