Sleeping too much? Not eating enough? Silly worries!

How do you know if your baby is sleeping too much?  I think I'm just worried that maybe he isn't eating frequently enough?  He has the appropriate number of dirty/wet diapers and he is gaining weight.  So I guess I know I shouldn't worry, yet I can't help myself.

He normally sleeps through the night, actually falling asleep between 11.30 and 12.30 and wakes up sometime between 9 and 10.30am.  It took him a lot longer to fall asleep last night, though, because of bad gas pain.  So I'd guess he fell asleep around 1.30 or 2am.  He did wake up and eat around 6.30, but immediately fell back asleep and is still sleeping!

I've been so good about not getting wrapped up in these little worries for almost 6 weeks, but now it's hitting me.  It makes me wish I had a baby scale at home.  I feel like going and waking him up, just so I can feed him.  But at this age, he'll wake up if he's hungry... right?  Please alleviate my worries!

  • You can have my baby who wakes up pretty much every 2 hours. I'll take yours.

Seriously... you have a gift. Please, appreciate it.

  • If baby is gaining, and has passed birth weight, let him sleep!! So many people have posted to not wake a sleeping baby. Take it from someone with a Crappy napper, enjoy it. My LO sleeps so poorly during the day, I would kill for him to sleep longer so I could actually do things. Stop worrying.

  • As much as I think you should appreciate the sleep, I also say don't ignore your motherly instinct. As long as he is gaining weight, everything is fine. If you are not sure if he is gaining weight, call you pedi's office and ask if you can stop by for a weight check. You should be able to do it with a nurse and not even see the pedi. You could also weigh him by holding him on a scale with you and then subtracting your weight but this is not as accurate.
