Anybody 17+ weeks and not feel the baby?

After reading the 20 week poll (which I'll fill out after my dr's apptment today), I'm a little nervous b/c it seems everyone can feel the little kicks and I don't think I've felt anything! Now I'm a little nervous. ughh

Re: Anybody 17+ weeks and not feel the baby?

  • I have been feeling VERY infrequent flutters since 13 weeks...I'd say this is the first week where Iam feeling her consistently move and kick strongly.

I'll be 17 weeks tomorrow and I haven't felt anything yet.  I don't care if I get flamed for saying this- but i'm skeptical of half the posters who say they are feeling movement, especially those that are earlier than 17(ish) weeks.  It is pretty rare to feel baby movement that early on, especially if it is your first child.  Half of the posters are just feeling gas bubbles or stretching/cramping.

Don't be concerned.  Many people don't start feeling movement until around 20 weeks or so, especially if you have an anterior placenta.  I think your body type also affects when you feel movement.

I'm eager/antsy too... but I just keep reminding myself that I could start feeling flutters any day now!

  • I have felt movement but nothing consistant yet. Some days I'll feel something a few times throughout the day and other days it seems I don't feel anything at all. I thought with this being my third I would have felt consistant movement a lot sooner but nope. Thank goodness for my doppler. My daughter was never a big mover.. there would be days when I actually had to sit down and push on my belly to get her to move. I think this baby may be the same way.

  • I'll be 17 weeks tomorrow and think I've MAYBE felt the baby twice.  Yesterday I was talking to my belly and asking him to please move lol.  I know it's different for everyone so I'm just trying to be patient, but I feel the exact same way as you.

  • Funny you should mention, this morning I was laying in bed and I finally felt a few flutters just under my belly button, so I think that was the baby lol. My doc said for first timers or those with no to little belly fat pre-pregnancy, it can take up to 22 weeks to feel it and know it.
  • Ill be 17 weeks Saturday and I think at time I "might" feel something but its sooo hard to tell for sure.  I know one time I did feel pokes but only once and I just want to fell A KICK and know for sure he/she is in there and doing ok!  Makes me nervous each day and I wish I had a doppler!
  • Did you have you a/s scan yet? I ask because if your placenta is in the front you might not feel it. It's different for everyone, I read you can expect it from 18-22 weeks. Hang in there, I know it's hard!!!!

  • I haven't felt anything definitive yet, and this is number two for me!  So glad I can check on LO with the doppler, or I'd be really nervous.  I felt my son at almost 18 weeks, but he was super active in utero and still is!

  • i am 18.5 weeks and have felt NADA. don't worry, it isn't worrisome until after 20-something weeks.

  • I understand that people can be skeptical about feeling movement early, but I refuse to let anyone tell me that what I've felt is not my baby. I am very in tune with my body. There are sometimes where I am unsure if it's the baby or gas, but mostly I can tell if it's one way or the other. I refuse to let anybody rain on my parade, just because they didn't feel their baby move until later in their pregnancy, everyone's body and baby are different!

  • I'm probably one of the further along posters that hasn't felt any movement.
(I saw two 19+ weekers respond, but neither said they haven't felt anything...)

I have an anterior placenta (a pillow, so to speak, cushioning Baby's movement) and I started off overweight (fat = another type of pillow).  My doctor said I may not feel anything for a while and not to be concerned.

My own mother is my biggest annoyance so far.  Even with her knowing both of the things mentioned above, she still asks constantly if I've felt "life".
I guess the way it comes across to me, movement = life, and thus, no movement = dead!!
Umm... No.  My baby is not dead.  EVERY ultrasound I've had, Baby is dancing around - acting very much not dead.

    Ugh!

Hang in there.  You are definitely not alone.

  • I don't think I have felt anything yet. My Dr. told me I have anterior placenta and it will take longer for me to feel anything.

  • I will be 20 weeks saturday.... and I think I felt something once and haven't felt anything since... I do get a little sad when I hear everyone on here saying they feel the baby move because I want to feel something more often!

  • I didn't feel anything untill this week, and it isn't every day.  Some day's it is much more, and more often.  Other days I may feel a bump here and there and that is it.

  • Yea, its funny that comment about being skeptical of people feeling baby early appears to be pregnant with her first. I have most definitely felt the baby move from early on...I'm not saying they were big ol kicks and such...but definitely felt a flutter here and there...if you knew what we are taking about...it is unmistakable.

  • I didn't feel my son until almost 24 weeks, so I'm not worrying, our doctor said that because it was so late with my son, it will probably be around the 20 week mark for us, no big, it will come.

  • This is my second, and I haven't felt anything yet that I am sure is the baby. I've felt a couple of flutters that I thought were possibilities, but then I decided it was just gas :) Hang in there! You're not alone!

  • I only feel, what I think is baby, in savasana after an hour long yoga practice. I am not 100% sure if it is baby or not but it doesn't feel like the RLP or the gas I normally have and is the same feeling each time after yoga. Other than that I can sometimes feel it when I dig in my stomach with my fingers or when I am laying on my stomach. But again, I am not sure if these items are baby or not, I am just relating them to that because they don't feel like anything else. So I haven't really felt what I absolutely know is baby, but my baby is perfectly healthy and I am sure yours is too!

  • I'm 17 weeks and I'm pretty sure I felt the baby move for the first time day before yesterday. It was kind of a fluttery movement right under my belly button, and it happened very early in the morning, as I was waking up. I think I was squishing the baby cause I had been sleeping on my stomach and he didn't like that!

If you read my post, you'd notice that I acknowledged that mamas feel baby earlier when it isn't baby #1.

  • Thank goodness I am not the only one!!

I thought I had felt something a few weeks ago, but I don't know. It is making my very nervous. I can't wait for my ultrasound on Monday, just so I know everything is okay.

  • It's most common for you to feel your first between 18-22 weeks.  I am not convinced that I have felt the baby at this point.
  • I've felt flutters since the beginning of 2nd tri with this pregnancy, but nothing I can definitely point to as LO.  I can't rule out that it's just gas.

FWIW, with my daughter, I didn't feel her for sure until 22 weeks.  I understand you're nervous, but try not to worry.

  • I am pretty sure I have not felt anything yet. Not knowing what it feels like plus a supposed anterior placenta (my RE said this at 6 weeks), I assumed it would be longer for me. I am jealous of those that have, though!

19 weeks, have a only felt anything maybe a few times - could of been gas too.  Only have felt the flutters twice.

  • I'm 17 weeks and feeling a whole lot of nothing. I had myself convinced that I was feeling something, but I'm pretty sure they were just muscle twitches.

  • I'm 19 weeks tomorrow and still haven't felt much.  I rarely feel the baby and even then it's only when I'm lying down at night or in the morning and it's not strong kicks it's more like light movement.  I'm getting impatient but my doctor said it's completely normal and I may not feel much until 20 weeks.  But I know my baby's ok and that makes me happy.
  • I'm almost 17w and last night I definitely felt something, but it might have been a muscle twitching--I'm not really sure.  I couldn't feel anything from the outside, but there was something going on in there.  Confused

I have to say I agree.  I wouldn't say that about any individual person, because who knows for sure what anyone else is feeling, but I'm dubious that everyone who was claiming to feel movement at 14 weeks or whatever really was.

With DD I first felt movement around 19 weeks.  With this one, it was around 16-17 weeks (I might have felt something earlier, but despite going through this before, I wasn't sure), and I've actually been surprised how quickly the movement got strong enough that even DH can feel it sometimes.

  • I am due the day after you and I *just* started feeling little bubbles on Tuesday.  It's still not super noticeable, not frequent, and not actual kicks.

ditto this.  When I went to my OB appt at 17 weeks, she asked if I was feeling movement, I said no, and she then told me she would have been surprised if I said yes.  Not saying that no one feels movement early, I just think we've seen a LOT of people saying they are when it's really not common.

  • I'm about 17 weeks and can't be sure I've felt anything either. I have flutters every so often...but I wonder if that's just my stomach girgling.

My doctor said most movement doesn't occur until 20-25 weeks. I thought this was a little late...but that's what she said. She said I'll know when it happens. There's always a healthy heartbeat so I'm not worried. I bet it'll happen when we least expect it. I usually fall asleep at night with my hand on my stomach trying really hard to feel anything!

  • I'm 19 weeks in the next day or two, and I haven't felt anything yet that I recognize as baby and not gas.  I feel for movement several times a day by laying real still and keep my hand on my belly, but nothing that seems baby for sure.  I've heard it's common for first pregnancies to take longer to feel movement, like 20-22 weeks sometimes.  I do know our baby is healthy because he could not sit still during the a/s.

  • I thought I felt something the other week, it felt like someone blowing bubbles through a straw, but I haven't felt is since.  I am starting to think it was just some muscle spasm or something.  I don't have a dopplar so I am not so patiently waiting for my appointment Wednesday to hear the heart beat and then the following week will be the A/S.  This time is going to drag on forever!  I'm hoping that after the appointment Wednesday, time will fly!!!

  • I'm 17 weeks and haven't felt anything definitive. I think I felt some kind of movement down there that wasn't me (ie - it wasn't my digestive track and it wasn't the same sensation as the growing/stretching aches) and that might have been baby but I'm not sure. If it was something, I think maybe the little one was just changing positions - didn't feel like a kick.

But for first time mommies, I think this is normal. I'm sure we'll both feel something in the next few weeks. Baby is indeed moving - we just aren't feeling it yet!
