We went to the pediatrician yesterday for Lo's 6 month check up. He was saying within the next two months we should give her little bits of cheese or yogurt to help her build up a tolerance to the dairy. I asked him if I should still do this even if she is still not tolerating milk in my BM. He said yes because breast milk is complicated and you don't always know what is causing it. Is this odd advice? Also he said that there are two ways to be intolerant of milk through lactose or protein. I thought that an LO could only be intolerant of the protein in the milk if it's a reaction with the BM. Am I right? Thanks!
Re: Odd advice?
Yeah....I do think its odd advice. Milk isn't something you build immunity to, actually its something that can be fine in small amounts and build up to a big problem.
I know that all pedis differ, but I haven't heard of one recommending introducing cow's milk at 6 months...especially if your LO has already shown an intolerance to the protein in your breast milk.
he's right about there being 2 different ways to be intolerant to milk (lactose or protein).. if it's lactose than you're Lactose and intolerant. If it's protein, it's usually an allergy (obviously I'm no doctor)
If you plan on doing this on your own, i would first try giving your LO dairy in baked goods first and then move onto yogurt (i heard on this board that it's easiest to tolerate). If you feel uncomfortable than i would do this at the doctors office. it wouldn't hurt introducing foods that your child has had issues with at his office so he's watched for a few minutes.
not sure where your pedi came up with that....
our allergist suggested that as we indroduced new foods- we could rub some of the food on his cheek. If he reacted to the allergen just being rubbed on his skin- chances were high that we'd have a bad reaction if he ingested. No reaction on the skin ment that we were less likely to see a reaction..
I like magdusia's suggestion of doing baked goods first and then yogurt. Keep benedryl handy just in case.
There was someone who posted recently (I don't know if it was this board or 9-12) that she did this with her kid. Started giving her LO a tsp. of yogurt a day, the next week upped it to 2 tsp. a day and so on and now her LO can eat yogurt and cottage cheese no problem. I don't know if this woman's LO was lactose intolerant or had an allergy, but she swears it worked. So yes, on the surface it sounds odd, but maybe your pedi has had an experience like this where it helped.
Allergic to soy, oat, egg, peanuts, and tree nuts
It makes sense with a lactose intolerance I think. They have to start producing the lactose in their own bodies so they can digest it. I just read Kelly'smom again and it said that if your LO is reacting to the dairy in your breast milk that it is usually always the protein. I think we'll definitely try rubbing it on her skin first. I think I would feel much better also if she didn't have a reaction to my milk anymore. I guess it's time to eat some diary again!
