Preemies

Update on my Preemie Twins!

My twins were born via c-section on 7/11/11 at 28w4d due to TTTS and IGUR.  Owen James was born at 4:25pm weighing 2 lbs and measuring 13" long.  At 4:27 Miles Reed was born weighing 2 lbs 8 oz and measuring 14.25" long.  Both had apgars of 5 and 7.  They are both doing very well in the NICU now.  Owen is a such little fighter!  He is still on the ventilator but on the lowest settings and will be changed over to C-PAP hopefully soon.  Miles is also on the vent with room air - not as big as a show off as his little brother - but the neos say they are both doing wonderful.

I honestly think I am still in shock that they are actually here, because it still feels surreal.  They are so perfect and tiny, but I cannot quite believe they are my babies, if that makes sense.  I was able to change their diapers today, and boy did they get mad about that!  My c-section recovery is going really well and much easier that I expected.  I might add that I am blessed that my own mom is a NICU nurse with 20+ years experience. She has been invaluable to us.

I will get discharged on Friday after being in the hospital since 24 weeks.  The hospital is about 2 hours from home unfortunately, but there is an awesome NICU social worker who is helping us tremendously to get every benefit we can and the hospital is letting us a free room to stay in when we visit.  I will probably just post and run for now, since things are still crazy busy, but I am sure I will be back on more often in the future.  Just wanted to update!  P.S.  Thank you for the awesome messages from the other day, I was just able to read most of the responses today.  DevonJones - I can already relate to so many of the things you said and thank you for all the advice!  Neko - I have been thinking about you and your twins - I'm glad they are doing well!  Here are a few pics from Monday:

They are adorable and so strong! Congrats!
  • They look amazing! Maybe ask your social worker if any local hospitals have apartment buildings that they rent out to people w/ medical needs or family in the hospital. I was 2 hours away from the NICU my girls were in and we lived in a furnished apartment. It wasent great but it was sure better than nothing!

T+Ps for an uneventful stay. Any chance of them moving to a hospital closer once they get a bit bigger?

  • Welcome to the world baby boys!  Your little guys are adorable!  I am so happy to hear they are doing well and your recovery has been smooth-sailing!  Our little ones are 1 1/2 hours away, so I feel ya on the inconvenience of having your babes far away from home.  Have you spoken to the social worker at the hospital yet?  There are two options that give us a place to stay nearby that are affiliated with the hospital.  It only costs $10-15 a night to stay.  We haven't stayed yet---but probably will this weekend to give us a break.  Hopefully, your hospital has something similar?

  • They're beautiful! Brings back memories, that's for sure!  The UVC/UAC lines, the vent, the works.  Hope the social worker is able to work something out for y'all, can't imagine being so far away!  Hang in there, Lady!  I remember feeling like I was loosing my mind with all the hormones.  I cried every other five minutes, it was weird, I'd be fine one second, next thing I knew there were tears flowing!  Thinking of you!
