Food Allergy

Pizza Day at DC

Received an email from DS school this morning saying that tomorrow is Pizza day for all kids 18mos and up...

Need ideas on Dairyfree and Egg Free pizza recipes.

He's also peanut free and soy "lite" (can handle a small amount but too much and he'll react to it).

I plan on hitting up Whole Foods at lunch today...

TIA

Re: Pizza Day at DC

  • First of all, if that was me i would say ABSOLUTELY NO!!  i would never allow my DC to have a pizza day while my son is allergic to dairy.  Why can't they celebrate with stickers?  or art?

i never noticed how much we reward with food and everything is about food when it can easily be fun art project.  I'm obviously going to have a hard time when my son goes to school.

You did write that he has a "light" allergy  so hopefully it will be ok but all i keep thinking about is the kids touching everything and then your child being exposed.

Here is a Pizza Dough i make and i just put marinara sauce and dayia cheese on top.

  • He goes to a center and the entire center is having pizza day, just not his class. They had ice cream day a couple weeks ago that was a mess and sent my son into a melt down becasue all his friends had ice cream and he didn't... OY!

the joys of having a kid with food allergies.

only the beginning of him not being able to have what his friends at school eat.

that's hard! i'm sure there are other kids with FA in the center if it's big.

i'm going to cry when my son realizes he's "different" and can't have what his friends have. Now it's easy, we leave and ta-da.  Allergies suck!

  • WF has some egg free english muffins in the freezer secion (enjoy life brand I think).  I top one of those with sauce and diya cheese for a quick pizza.  I tried the Bob's red mill pizza dough last week and it was awful.  If your son doesn't have wheat issues- read the back of a regular pizza dough mix and you might be able to just sub the eggs with ener-g egg replacer and make your own.

  • Most pizza doughs don't have eggs in them.  I also make calzones with pizza dough I make and then I put pepporoni, chicken, beef and garlic with tomato sauce inside.  You can add Daiya cheese if you choose but there is so much flavor you don't need it.  This might be easier to transport and it would be a super cool pizza (or weird because it looks different.)

Its hard when your the only kid who can't have what the others have.  If you know in advance like you do that is good, however the DC should provide a substitute meal for your child if they are providing pizza for all then they provide for those that can't have it.  The center I worked at arranged for allergies so the child who couldn't have the offending food got something like it with the missing offender.  I know all centers don't or wont do this.  So no one felt like they were singled out or different.

  • Check the Amy's frozen pizzas.  They seem to be pretty allergy friendly.

  • wasn't able to run out at lunch...didn't have a lunch. BUT, I was able to find out that ZPizza makes a Vegan Pizza. I called and they use Diaya Cheese and No dairy or eggs in the crust so we are a go. Ordering a small vegan plan "cheese" pizza for him. He can have a slice for dinner (with fresh fruit and veggies) and I'll send some to school tomorrow too! yay...now I don't have to fumble around with throughing a make shift pizza together after he goes to bed tonight.

  • Yea - I'm glad you found a solution and that your LO can be included in the fun!

I'm assuming your DC already has a hand washing after meals and no sharing rule in place.  I would just ask that the staff be extra vigilant about wiping down the tables and chairs after the pizza party to avoid contact reactions.

Glad you found a safe pizza. I had to tell my day care provider that my son can only eat what I bring him. He is in the infant room, so I don't have to worry now, but in a couple of months he will be moving to the toddler room, and they are allowed to bring in store bought cupcakes and cakes for birthdays. The administrator assured me that my child would not be given a cupcake, but suggested that I bring a safe treat that stays in his cubby so that on the days they would be celebrating he would have a treat as well. I would hate for my little guy to feel left out, but better left out than sick. At one, I am thinking he would not be too upset to have a sweet treat even if it was not exactly like the other kids.

Not sure if you have one near you, but just for future reference, Mellow Mushroom has a dairy-free pizza. Not sure about the eggs, but you could always check. The location near us is really good and helpful about DD's dairy allergy.
